22 is an eternity in a jrpg animu world.

Auron is 35. Looks 55. Maybe even 60+.

Tbh I think Lulu looks early 30s at most.

Wakka looks like he's approaching 40.

That's kinda just how that game is as I recall. You could add 10-15 years to every character and I'd believe it.

Yeah the ages are way off. Although maybe it tracks because they live in a really stressful world with Sin destroying everything.

look at the popular meme that shows the old guy with the cane that is 30 lol. Japanese games had such a distorted scale for age. Young teens were like mature adults.

That's jrpgs for you. The world is saved by teenagers and anyone over 20 is ancient.

Did the game resize the character portraits? I always thought Lulu had a weirdly wide manly jaw in the game but it looks fine here.

Wakka is supposed to be a year older than her but it doesn't seem like it I guess since she acts more mature.

Nah Lulu looks like she's in her 30s with all that makeup. And how she behaves too.

It's a Japanese/anime thing. Most characters that look like teens or young adults are middle schoolers too.
Japan has a very disturbing youth fetish.

Nah, doesn't look anywhere close to 40's. Mid-30's at the oldest, amd even that is a stretch.

A lot of fantasy stories in general tend to have shorter life expectancies for regular human characters, and go from a more medieval times approach to age milestones. So knight training starts as teens and retirement starts in their 30s.

lol Raven was exactly the example I was gonna use.

Another head scratcher is that Cid Highwind is 32 and Barrett Wallace is 35, but for some reason, Barrett is a blue collar tough guy while Cid is the old man. I guess black is higher priority on the list of things Japan has to stereotype than old is.

I mean, she lost her dude and then had to put up with his annoying ass kid brother who had it for her too. There are people who have died given those circumstances, so I think she looks fine, considering.

While this is true, I don't think that enters their minds when they're designing the characters, because most of the characters do actually look the ages they're said to be. It's just the ones in their mid 20s and up that look a lot older. In the same game, for instance, Karol definitely looks 12 and is 12.

Eh, disagree. He's got the old man sunken eyes. It's also an in-game thing that he apparently looks old, because he's constantly called "old man." It's a similar thing as FF7 Cid.

Japan has a very disturbing youth fetish.

Sometimes its an artstyle thing. Anime artstyle makes characters appear much younger because all the indicators of age, like noses and lips, get simplified to mere lines and there is a stronger focus on the eyes. Sometimes theyre drawn with rounder and bigger heads. In that artstyle children and adults have the same face with the only indicator of age being their height. In the real world even people of very short height, Im talking below 5 feet, still look like adults because they have adult faces.

It depends on the series. Octopath Traveler all the main casts are adults and people in their 30s are labeled as young adults.

I guess it makes sense if you think of it not as a literal thing, but more as the perception of the main characters.

Kind of like the muted trombone voice all the adults in Peanuts have. In universe, they're saying real words, and the kids even more or less understand them, but for the audience the message is what they say doesn't really matter because they don't belong in the kids' world.

So these characters might look and act age appropriate in universe, but since the story is about teenagers, they exaggerate they elderly qualities for the audience to get the message that these people are not supposed to be the relatable ones.

That, or Japan just legit thinks normal people are old as hell. *shrugs*

In JRPGs, if you're over 30 you're practically on death's door.

Tales of Xilia featured an actual old man, in his 60s. And acts more spry than Raven pretends to be.
