Sarcastic nature of this topic as a whole aside, this would actually be a pretty neat idea for a campaign.

A rising and proactive king in a setting with tons of monster-infested ruins from a fallen ancient civilization forms a team of skilled specialists and soldiers, whose mission is to locate, chart, explore, and "pacify" ruins by murdering everything that crosses their path inside. The justification for doing so is to prevent certain monster types from breeding in ruins and then spreading out from them to raid existing settlements and farms, but also to discover, catalogue, cache, and research magical artifacts and weapons to keep them out of the hands of the unwary, unworthy, or ignorant (with the added bonus that this strengthens the kingdom's military potential and also theoretically prevents enemies of the kingdom from acquiring it to use against them).

It flips a lot of standard D&D tropes, because players don't/can't loot - they're contractually not allowed to take gold or artifacts they find (especially because many of those artifacts can be dangerous). Their job is to leave everything behind (including corpses), while a clean-up team comes in later, and then a research and recovery team comes in after that. Sneaking a few coins or some relics here or there is possible, but getting caught can result in significant punishment (or removal from the team entirely).

To offset no looting, members of the strike team are issued magical items before each mission by a quartermaster (basically Q division from James Bond), and have to return them after each mission. This allows the DM to let the players have fun with all sorts of different toys, but also able to remove them at will if they start to cause balance problems. Characters can potentially ask for specific items (or just have it all be random issue), but what the administrators are WILLING to give players depends on how trusted/competent they are, as well as what's available ("Sorry, I can't give you the Rod of Ruin, someone on Team Thunderstrike took that one for a mission already").

Players also receive a specific salary/bounty for doing jobs (so players can have their own personal gold resource), which they are free to spend on whatever personal items or services they want. If a player buys a magical item with their own money, they own it themselves, and thus don't need to return it after missions. But items "for sale" will generally be weaker or less impressive than relics found in ruins (because basically, the premise is that the research teams find magical items, study them, figure out how to reproduce them, and then mass produce them using modern (ie, lesser) magical technology and methods. So the replicas are less powerful than the originals).

All of that can even be tied into the concept of "rank" - as you successfully complete dungeon-clearing jobs, you go up in rank, which increases your salary, and which increases your access to more powerful magical items to use on missions. The better you are, the more effective you get, which makes you even better, and so on. Rank can just be an in-universe recognition of character XP level, or it can be a separate stat the DM can track, and raise based on in-game performance.

The only downside of all that is that having a rank which gives you a regular gold stipend is straight out of Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy VIII is the worstest and most terrible FF game ever.

A DM could also put a twist on that - instead of being the strike team that goes in and murders all of the monsters, the protagonists are the clean up team. They have to go in, pile up corpses, burn them, deliberately set off traps, and occasionally get attacked by monsters the strike team missed, or hit with traps the strike team failed to trigger, so they still need to be at least somewhat able to fight and defend themselves. Or the players could be an escort team that has to go in with the research team, defending them against anything the elite strike team missed (but then the entire team basically becomes an escort mission, which a lot of players might hate).

Every member of the team will be issued 2 scrolls of knock; your Clairvoyant on this mission is Master Sergeant Osmodiego who will provide tactical support. Do not breach a room without the whole team being prepared, we want no casualties while inflicting total supremeacy

Speaking of which, if anybody wants to donate to help him pay off the culpability co-pay we'll be passing a hat around after the mission."
