Can someone tell me why flying cars are seen as this huge leap in technology? They don't sound very practical IMO.

Timing more than anything tbh. Flying cars were a popular idea because at the time the US highway system/airline industry were expanding so peoples' visions of the future reflected it. The space race was also beginning and people were used to technology from NASA research trickling down and ending up in consumer-level tech.

honestly I do think they'd be practical, assuming we handwave the part where they have to actually function on a technological level.

so many city design issues are based around the obsession with the Road and how much ground space you need to dedicate just to getting cars around places. it would be amazing if the cars could all just get stuffed up in the air and we could reclaim all that space for things that can't fly like pedestrians or buildings

Think of all the terrible drivers you've seen, now imagine them in a plane, during rush hour.

It isn't happening (not without full automation anyway).

It was like 2 weeks ago I heard on the radio that some some city in CA has started allowing flying "taxis". Haven't heard anything after that so I assume its going ok.

Not that I would get in one.
