At first, it wasn't. Then people starting coming up with other "robot slurs" based off of irl slurs, and it was obvious that it was becoming a method for people to be racist without directly saying them in a way they could pretend they weren't being, you know, racist.

Yep.

The OP is largely an incomplete question because it's got two main uses:

  1. Making fun of idiot racists
  2. Idiot racists playing dogwhistle
If you use it in the first manner, you're fine. If you use it in the second manner, not so much.

This. It wasn't, but then it quickly became a stand-in for actual slurs, because bigots think they're clever.

What if someone wants to use it as a negative term for AI without any other racial implications?

Or is it just going to always carry an externally negative connotation in relation to race due to asshats being asshats?

Though I could definitely see the term developing use in relation to actual humans/people, especially if we enter a technological phase where we have fully robotic prosthetics, and it becoming a legitimate slur against a group.

For those who feel clanker is real life slur adjacent, how do you feel about the term "bot" or "bots"? Because that sounds pretty slurry to me, with that logic.

Well apparently some are using it in racially charged reenactment skits on tiktok.

I've mostly only ever seen it used in anti-AI contexts.

It's not the word itself, it's the context in which it's used. People get way too into futuristic racist cosplay and it's off-putting.

I guess I understand, it's just hard to wrap my mind around caring when it comes to nonhuman, non-sentient automatons. I may naive but I feel like my dislike for robots is not a slippery slope that will lead me to hating racial minorities. (As someone doesn't actually use the word clanker.)

Legit question. If robots/AI do become extremely commonplace and even more detrimental to human society, then are we allowed to call them names? >_>

It's not really about the robots or whatever. It's just the idea of people being eager to be pretend racist.

Pretend racism against pretend people doesn't really bother me? I guess y'all are saying it should?

Racism and racists are facts of life, unfortunately.

I think there is some measure of comedy and subversion to be mined from obvious parodies of racist speech in the context of artificial machines. Difficult for me to make the leap from joke to sincere "veiled/thinly veiled racism," though I suppose there are people like that out there.

Create a situation in which one group is forcefully dominated and enslaved by another group, made to do all the work, and then treated and slurred at like they're the problem? Oof

After seeing how quickly white people gathered to spread it around, yeah I've started to at least grow distaste over it. It's ultimately an excuse for them to feel like they're saying a hateful slur without it being one.

Like, it's not offensive, but unironic usage of it kinda tells me the headspace that person is in, IMO.
