I personally have never watched the movie, but I do feel like a lot of the aesthetic and the 'slow mo kung fu' was a reason why it could be considered a favorite of ours when we were younger. Does it still hold up? Is there more to it then just dodging bullets in slo mo? Curious about those who have went back to watch it more recently and if its a good movie on its own or not

First movie is nearly perfect. Second one is up there too aside from a few weird choices. Third one, well, they tried.

Im in the minority that loved all 3, the animatrix and the games (apart from the mmo).

It is a really great movie, one of those that influenced movies and other media (like video games) for decades to come.

The first one and Animatrix are fantastic. The others... not so much.

Also, Path of Neo was a surprisingly decent video game. Just throwing that out there.

I watched the first one years ago (as in, like, 2018) for the first time and it's still a good movie

Tbh, I kinda liked all of them (haven't seen the 4th one or Animatrix)

Just watch it already. It's good and still holds up today. I do think Animatrix and the sequels (or at least 2 and 3) are worth a watch.

In ratings:

1>Animatrix>2>3>4

For Matrix 4, they should have brought back Laurence Fish Bourne and Hugo Weaving in some form
. Not sure what else they could have done

The first is still good with good effects for the late 90s. I barely remember the sequels. Something about 2 albinos with dreads, idk.

I liked the first one and the second was alright. But that third one, with the invasion of zion scene was just goofy and will be the reason that I never rewatch this trilogy.

Third movie hinges a lot on how open you are to a Matrix movie that largely occurs outside of the Matrix. I personally was disappointed by it.

Fourth movie is garbage.

The first was great and I'd look back at it much more fondly if they didnt expand on it. I loved the animatrix and even liked the games but the first movie was far above the rest at the time. If I didnt know where the world of the matrix went after 1 I'd view it better.

First one is a fantastic film.

Second one is a lesser film with some amazing moments.

Third one is a decent action film.

Animatrix is also amazing, but some of the sequences are better than others.

I rewatched both it and T2 a few years back after not having watched either for over a decade.

They both held up, and in fact both rose in my estimation to the point I feel both are up there as two of the absolute best sci-fi movies of all time and may never actually be topped.

They do not do action sequences anywhere near as good as those two films, and while it's unfair to directly compare most action movies to those two as their action sequences are just unbeatable it does really highlight how a lot of mainstream blockbuster flicks nowadays have really bad cinematography and poor directing on top of their action sequences being exceptionally lamely choreographed and at times being completely nonsensical (and by nonsensical I mean not making any sense in the context of the movie and the powers the characters have.)

TBH that stretch between 1991 though to the late 00s was the peak of action movies with a very few reminders of those glory days made since.
