Current Events > Bg3 - did i fuck up with Nere and the Duergars? *spoilers*

This entire storyline has confused me. Maybe i wasn't paying attention.

Essentially, I get to this place and there's a bunch of nasty little assholes keeping gnome slaves. Im supposed to care about some guy called Nere who's trapped in a cave and I have to save him. I open up the cave and it turns out Nere is the biggest asshole of them all.

So killed them all except the gnome slaves. The weird dissonance im getting though is it feels like the game wants me to care about Nere or xare about the Duergars. Wtf is going on? They're a bunch of slavers! Theyre killing gnomes for sport!

What is happening

No, you did the right thing. Nere is a piece of shit.

I dint understand why the game was pushing me so hard to free him. All that just to save a slaver? What is going on

I saved him to give his head to the mushroom dudes.

There's also a couple of gnomes trapped along side him. Besides that he drops some of the best boots in the game.

Ah ok. The dialogue and journal entries were making it feel like I have a good reason to save him in particular. I'm glad.

I first tried to engage him head on but between him and all his duergars I had a really hard time. Next time around I took out the duergars first and then after I freed him I just ganked him.

It's been a while but I seem to recall that he was supposed to have or have the authority to give you an item that helps you get through the Act 2 area.

Then if you're pretending to be aligned with the Absolute, he's an ally. If you're a goodie then the gnomes are in there too. Myconids want his head so you have to get him out to collect it. And I think there was mention of some treasure or something back there you might want. Lots of reasons to clear the cave in overall, not necessarily because you want to help Nere.

some people (like me) want to play evil. unfortunately being evil in this game isn't very rewarding.

edit: I'm starting to remember more detail about the quest. I'm not sure who told you to rescue him but IIRC the mushroom people wanted his head
