Tying it to ranked play is just super weird. Even beyond the exclusivity to online subs, why would they put so much emphasis on the multiplayer versus element of such a weird (for Pokmon) battle system? Was anyone even asking for a competitive mode with this pseudo-MMO style gameplay?

even if this was a tradtional pokemon game this would be scummy

as the majority of players do not care about the PvP in pokemon

yes i know pokemon has a very profitable and active e sports community

but they are still the minority of players

If its something like just play like 1-3 ranked matches, win or lose, it wouldnt be so bad. But given that only Greninja gets one on day 1 and the other 2 release later on, I get the feeling that wont be the case.

Also wouldnt surprise me if they go even scummier and give you an alternative way of getting them by buying the DLC.

  • makes a new pokemon game. Calls in gen 6 x and y.
  • makes a new gimmick called mega evolution. Doesn't give it to the new starters
  • plans to make a 3rd version. Doesn't follow through so the megas never happen.
  • 15 years later they finally make them. Locks them to competitive battling.

Yeah this fucking sucks. So you need an NSO subscription for these three megas plus whatever else they add in later. Also you need the dlc that they already announced to get other megas. Pokeymans are getting pretty expensive.

I wonder how well the game runs online. Tera raids were absolute ass, in terms of base mechanics and also with the lag for a system that doesn't strike me as all that difficult to make run well. This game actually has real-time combat. If its performance is half as shitty as Tera raids, then no conceivable mega could possibly be worth the trouble.

Also, if you actually need to do well in battles against other players to advance and earn the stones, then GF can go fuck itself again for that. I like that pokemon lets you coast through the games and just enjoy the critters you like, and over level and cheese challenges if you need to. Having to look up meta teams to even stand a chance is fucking boring.

Ah, they would be added in the base game in that case. MTA would reward you with early access to the new character if you played online, but everyone else got the character added to the lineup a month later.

I hope that's all this is.

Why are people complaining about this? Do you not know megas can only be seen through battles? Getting them as a reward on battle rank seems the right way to emphasis the battling aspect of said pokemon.

This is how GF has done it in the past, though the rewards were way less important than otherwise-exclusive Mega Stones. Basically participation trophies in that if you could do literally one battle, you'd earn it. And the "competitive" VGC used to be a series of month-long events, so I get putting Chesnaught/Delphox later.

GF has already done the exclusive Mega Stone thing, with XY giving early players a free Torchic with Blazikenite (which would otherwise not be available at all until the next games, ORAS). I wouldn't be surprised if this is similar. Honestly I'm surprise GF even cares about a potential online battles with their weird alt battle system from this game. They didn't for PLA.
