My understanding was the game was mostly written in 1999, and they still somehow predicted the current age of social media and personalized algorithms. Its kinda frightening >_>

scifi writers predicted it, Kojima or his writers were well read

If only the rest of the game up to that point kept me interested enough to care. The constant disrespect toward Raiden, villains who were a step down from MGS1, and a settings/plot that weren't also as interesting as what MGS1 had had me wishing the game would just end by the point the game decided to just have its famous exposition dump (which was shortly after the Raiden running around naked stuff, which hurt to type by the way).

The bait and switch probably also made people mad who didn't know about it beforehand.

I mean the writing was on the wall even then.

Sci fi is all about realizing that technology will always keep improving and that human greed will always be constant in humanity.

I only played it about a year or 2 ago. The bait and switch was something I knew about so it didn't bother me. But yeah, outside 5 of which I've just played GZ, it remains my least favorite of the mainline games. Just wished it would be over with by the end and then comes the exposition barrage.

Most of the people of the world stayed inside because of a deadly disease/virus (I only played a few hours, so I don't really remember lol. I need to play it). So people like Norman Reedus work as delivery people that deliver almost anything you can think of, for the most part. It came out a few months before covid is mind boggling.

I think that the foreseeing stuff with MGS2 is overstated, as online communities, early stages of social media, tabloids, etc. existed when the game was written, but props to him and his team building on those concepts in a compelling way.

he did totally prophesize stuff with Death Stranding, though, with how heavily reliant we would all be on deliveries due to a global "catastrophe" (maybe not that bad, but many people did die).

To be fair, the game totally predicted a President who would grab people's crotches.
