He was showing up to campuses and talking with anyone who would talk to him. He was one of the eras most effective practitioners of persuasion. When the left thought its hold on the hearts and minds of college students was nearly absolute, Kirk showed up again and again to break it. Slowly, then all at once, he did. College-age voters shifted sharply right in the 2024 election. American politics has sides. There is no use pretending it doesnt. But both sides are meant to be on the same side of a larger project we are all, or most of us, anyway, trying to maintain the viability of the American experiment. We can live with losing an election because we believe in the promise of the next election; we can live with losing an argument because we believe that there will be another argument. Political violence imperils that. Kirk and I were on different sides of most political arguments. We were on the same side on the continued possibility of American politics. It is supposed to be an argument, not a war; it is supposed to be won with words, not ended through bullets. I wanted Kirk to be safe for his sake, but I also wanted him to be safe for mine, and for the sake of our larger shared project. The same is true for Shapiro, for Hoffman, for Hortman, for Thompson, for Trump, for Pelosi, for Whitmer. We are all safe, or none of us are. This one is hard to swallow. I get what Ezra mostly means in regards to practicing politics the right way. The fact that he was the founder of a college aged political product that was successful and he spoke to different crowds a lot I guess is doing it through "right way". I guess I probably just put more consideration into how he actually persuaded people and I don't view his shock jock style of politics to be the right way to practice politics. Not all methods of using words to persuade are "right". They are better than violence for sure, but our bar is usually higher when talking about politics in other c ases. Charlie Kirk did not practice politics the "right way". He was a serial liar. He misrepresented the positions of his opponents. He spread misinformation. He made baseless claims about minorities (especially in the LGBTQ community). That is not the right way to "do politics". You are not on the same side of moving forward the American project! This eulogizing of Kirk is seriously pissing me off I strongly agree with you and disagree with Klein here. He is correct on the surface-political violence is not acceptable, and talking and persuasion is how political difference must be settled in a free and stable society. But that is just the most basic of requirements. Persuading people with lies, misinformation and hostility is NOT the right way to engage in politics. Kirk did that always, and just because he was using words instead of weapons doesnt make all that ok. The lies and rhetoric of the GOP and those who support them from large platforms is exactly why our political process Is so broken right now. Kirk was engaged in free speech, as is his right. The fact that he was subject to violence while doing so is not acceptable. But he was not properly engaging in the political process. Persuasion needs to be honest for any of this to work.
