I actually explored The Slab before getting transported there, so I had a good understanding of the layout. The section is pretty short and I liked it, but I can see why people are bothered by it, especially if they hadn't completed an ongoing corpse run. I'm a freak who loves the zero suit section in Zero Mission though.

Didn't have much of an issue with that segment but any frustration I did experience was forgiven instantly with the visual gag of the fly dressed as Hornet and her snapping its neck . So good

Been enjoying Hollow Knight, but mostly because I installed a mod that lets me teleport to any location at any time (that I've previously been to). I've decided I can't gaslight myself into enjoying the backtracking in this game. I'm mostly fine with that in other Metroidvanias, but in HK it just feels more tedious.

Not judging anyone who found it tough but I beat Widow last night and I might sincerely call it the easiest fight in the game up til this point. She spends so, so much time just standing there. So far the hardest boss for me has been Savage Beastfly, which felt like a real Traitor Lord scenario of "this boss is stupid easy so why have I died a dozen times"

whew, I just did Coral Tower and that was roooooooughhhh. It actually didn't take that many tries though and I felt the game rewarded me for mastering it (and I realized a great strategy which is you can pre-cast the "do random damage circles everywehre" spell while the coral spikes are still there to instantly hit enemies, which tbh makes it not so bad) but the boss at the end felt surprisingly easy in comparison and i one-shot him even though i went in at lethal health with no mana (edit: actually a tip for this boss if anyone ever wants it: when he summons the X-shape, there is room for you and him to kiss under the X, you don't actually have to leave. that gave me a lot of free attack windows)

savage beastfly was really hard but i honestly think moorwing is the most I've died to any boss lmao (and LJ probably, and honestly lugoli even without the glitch) but i think with moorwing the runback was tilting me and also moorwing is the type of boss where you can just hit it quickly once then have to back off and i'm way too impatient for that.

Lace 2 and First Sinner were super satisfying and I thought at first "i'll be here for hours" but then was surprised at how quickly I adjusted to them. Lace 2 probably my favourite fight in the game tbh, what an artful dance.

Is that really a spoiler when it's been in like literally every trailer? I thought it was okay, not spectacular. A little robotic feeling since it was really easy to get the boss in a loop.

Played for a few more hours. Still pretty early I'm sure. Still haven't died.

Like I know it gets hard, but I've already seen enough to know that the game isn't unfairly hard.

I'm late Act 2 at this point and it's definitely never felt unfair. Demanding as all hell, yes, but fair!

Legitimately curious what playing Hollow Knight after this would feel like because honestly I feel like even Godhome stuff would feel like it's moving in slow motion after some of this game's fights.

Honestly, once you're fully kitted out you can count the amount of dangerous fights in Godhome on one hand. Pantheon 5 is mostly an endurance test until the final 2 fights.

I am very afraid of what Silksong's Godhome is gonna look like, feels like most bosses can be a run ender if you slip up due to the two mask thing and how healing works.

What are some critically/popularly acclaimed games you'd consider unfair? I'd say Silksong's much harder than, say, Elden Ring.

Ball-busting games that are both hard and unfair don't tend to be critically and popularly acclaimed! I'd actually argue Elden Ring has a good handful of "unfair" encounters if you're playing solo and not at least using ashes.

Depending on how much we're willing to stretch "acclaim," I Want To Be The Guy and Noita immediately come to mind.

For more mainstream, Tales of the Abyss has absolute dogshit balancing on its highest difficulty and similar number bloat stuff like Uncharted's highest difficulty is "balanced" by being completely unfair to you. All of these examples are using modes of play that the average player will probably never engage with, though, so they get a pass among the general public.

Widow was a weird fight. I had to try it a decent chunk of times but I felt this one was definitely me being bad.

I think the fight plays a lot of tricks with like graphics, sound, etc that make the second phase feel more frantic than it actually should be in terms of what the hitboxes are doing, but that made it trickier to understand what was going on.

I was also just coming off the Fourth Chorus and Sister Splinter fights, (vague boss strategy spoilers) where for those I think every single free moment humanly possible you want to be jumping and slashing the boss, but at least for me the right approach to the Widow fight was really to just slow down and focus on dodging.

Edit: Oh meant to add this also. As far as boss runbacks go, I think in the original game the boss at the end of Queen's Gardens was by far the worst.

Good lord this game is big. Did a ton of stuff tonight and still have more side areas & quests to do in Act 2. I did pretty much everything in Bilewater yesterday (including a couple of hours of runbacks to the boss), which was a bit of a grind. Today I got through four bosses, will just leave my thoughts on each:

Father of the Flame: interest idea for a fight, felt like something from a more platforming focused game. Took me c.5 tries to get my head around mixing pogos and double jumps repeatedly, but once I did it was over. Very predictable.
Chef Lugoli: Lost 4 times but got a sense of how to dodge the attacks and which was most dangerous (whenever he slams the ground or jumps in and out of the water) then changed up my build to have access to more health with the phial. Needed a bit of a lucky offense to take him down with 1HP left at the end.
First Sinner: Incredible fight to play. Masterclass in making the player feel like a god under pressure despite actually being a lot more forgiving than the volume of noise and frequency of animations make it seem. Rewards aggression. Took 4 attempts, but I was close every time. No run back makes it easy to just relax and go for it.
Signis and Gron: Did it first time. They were strangely slow in their attacks + the minions were much more restrained than in other fights (e.g. Beastfly). No walls didn't feel too constraining as Hornet has so much manoeuverability and air access. The gauntlet with those fire throwers a couple of rooms earlier spamming explosions was much harder (not helped by poor lighting & shadows obstructing the screen)

I still have at least two optional areas left in Act 2, and no doubt still some things I've missed. Looking forward to getting at least one needle upgrade next time too.

The section itself isn't too bad but I am fundamentally against being locked in an area in a Metroidvania. I'm here for the exploration darn it. Also I am just not a fan of the whole losing your powers trope including the aforementioned Zero Mission section.

Ive seen enough.

45 degree down slash is just moronically designed, and this game has the same hitbox problem Hollow Knight did but with a bigger player character.

Movement in general was superior in the first game.

I remember getting to Margit in ER and thinking "I've played Souls for over 10 years now and I might have to literally quit this game at the first boss". It's hilarious to imagine people feeling the same at Moss Mother.

Yeah, you're gonna want to play a little more. I'd also recommend saving any Memory Lockets or whatever they are.

Anyway, just beat Sister Splinter. That was quite the difficulty spike. I really don't care for everything doing 2 damage. So far it's the boss that's given me the most trouble-- it took like five tries, which does kinda make me worried about future bosses.

On an unrelated note, I managed to hit a lever one the other side of a gate in The Marrow and I'm pretty sure I wasn't supposed to be able to do that? I fought the Skull Tyrant there and when I tried to check the other entrance to the area, it was pitch black. Not sure what that's about.

Beat the game without finding any sort of double jump. Didn't see that coming.

I mean I guess that's technically possible in HK? But there I did all the stuff for the good ending before I even realized it's optional.

Also just pogo off stuff (besides enemies) when you're right next to it. The margin for error is generous when you do it that way.

It's possible in HK, but it's much less likely to just happen naturally.
