First they've been banging on for years about how "the right to bear arms shall not be infringed" very much emphasizing the clear language making the right to bear arms a 'special' right that is absolutely sacrosanct. Compromising on that would be very dangerous for them going forward. Second the idea of deeming an entire group mentally ill and using that as an excuse to ban them from owning firearms is a particularly alarming overreach given how many NRA members could also be deemed mentally ill by any future administration using the exact same reasoning. They need to kill this and they will kill this.
