wasnt it corrupting SSDs?
No. There was a report of a potential issue but failure rates haven't significantly increased and nobody has been able to replicate or identify the issue.

Nah. Win8 made some very unpopular changes, so much so they released 8.1 as an update to somewhat undo them. Win11 is just it works, doesnt really do anything special. Its not bad like Vista or 8, it just isnt particularly good either. It just does the job.

Nope.

Tried using it the other day. Randomly froze and locked up opening the Settings app.

Nonstarter.

Linux Mint is the answer.

Nearly all the issues with it are PEBCAK and the few that aren't get fixed basically immediately.

So you're saying you have no fucking idea what you're talking about, then?

The latest version of windows is always "the worst one". 7 was bad because it wasn't xp. 8 was bad because it wasn't 7. 10 was bad because it wasn't 8.1. 11s bad because it isn't 10.

Been in the industry for twenty years and complaints about upgrading never end. People dont like change.

As far as windows 11 is concerned Ive used it since it came out and it's worked exactly like 10 in almost every aspect.
Okay, so I never used 8 on my computer, I did have a friend with a Windows 8 laptop and hated the interface. Microsoft went all in on touch OS and it showed and was honestly terrible. I'd move the mouse to the top of the screen and accidentally open another menu.

Maybe 8 isn't that bad if you make adjustments to it, but to me it's the modern Windows ME.

Out of all the updates Microsoft ever do, of course some are going to be particularly worse than others. That doesnt indicate a trend of every single OS they ever release is vastly inferior to the one prior

As long as it meets the listed system requirements, if your PC can run Windows 10 fine, it can run Windows 11 fine. The somewhat recent CPU requirement is due to a specific feature that older CPUs lack altogether; it isn't a matter of "well if you're just *slightly* under you might be okay, but you'll get better performance if you're over". And even then, many people have had success using workarounds to install it despite lacking that feature and it's worked okay (not that I'd recommend it, for the simple reason that if your CPU is old enough that it's not supported, it's time for a new one anyway).

Thank you Trumble. I will report back if I decide to make the switch, you helped put my mind at ease.

Agreed, I went from 7 to 10 and it was fine.

I heard 8+ or whatever it was called was better, but the only people who got that already had 8.

The biggest flaw 8 had was they made everything with the expectation of using touch interface.

Yeah that's pretty much it IMO. Windows 7 had the last proper start menu. Windows 8 had the full-screen start screen which basically hijacked your monitor when you pressed the windows key. 8.1 made it so that you don't need to have a full-screen start screen, it could be resized. Windows 10 start menu was very similar to the one from 8.1

Windows 11 start menu is different again but I got used to it easy, the main changes being it doesnt show the apps list by default, just the pinned apps/favourites. It has a "recommendations" section, which is a combination of recently installed apps, recently used apps/files, and ads (although I use win 11 pro and Ive only ever seen 1 ad). to view all the apps in a similar way that you would look at the old start menu list, its one additional click into the "all" section

It's literally the same shit as Windows 10 just with a stupid ass over engineered start menu. Only reason to not upgrade is if you have an application that isn't compatible with Windows 11.
What if my computer is a potato that already runs slow AF in Windows 10?

Not only is it stable, it's honestly perfectly fine as an OS if you were okay with 7 and 10. It's cool to hate the latest Windows but the hate has been so forced most of the time.

XP: Solid OS for the time.
Vista: Also a solid OS, it was just put on potato PCs. UAC could be annoying, but also could be disabled.
7: Literally Vista with a nicer skin, which ran better due to not being put on potatoes.
8: Yeah this sucked for non touch devices ngl.
8.1: Fixed many of the issues with 8, but yeah this was still not great.
10: Solid OS, quite a few ads
11: 10 with a different skin. TPM requirement is annoying, but also isn't an issue if your CPU is from 2018 or newer. If your PC is over 7 years old, it's honestly time for an upgrade.

Then either install Linux or get a new PC already.

This. Simply put: if your RAM isn't at least 8 GB and you use it for literally anything else than basic Office stuff, it's time to get new hardware.

I would love to buy a new PC. Unfortunately I need this thing called "money" that I have frivolously been squandering on things like food, utilities, and my child's school tuition. Efforts to find a better paying job have also been fruitless. I have been trying to scrape together money so I can buy at least a decent quality PC, but what with all the inflation lately I just don't have any money left over.

I guess I need to just stop being poor.
