https://www.ign.com/articles/it-had-become-about-box-office-dwayne-johnson-says-he-was-pigeon-holed-as-a-blockbuster-only-actor

"I have wanted this for a long time. When you're in Hollywood, as we all know, it had become about box office and you chase the box office. And the box office in our business is very loud, it can be very [overwhelming].

"It can push you into a corner and category 'This is your lane, this is what you do, and this is what people want you to be and this is what Hollywood wants you to be.

"And I understood that, and I made those movies and I liked them and they were fun, and some were really good and did well, and some not so good!
"But I think what I did realise is I just had this burning desire and this voice that was just saying, 'What if there's more, what if I can?'

"Sometimes it's hard to know what you're capable of when you've been pigeon-holed into something. It's harder to know, 'Wait, can I do that? I feel like I can. And sometimes it takes people who you love and respect to say 'you can."

I don't believe him. He has a massive ego and he wanted all those blockbusters. He refused to fight Shazam as Black Adam. Originally there was maybe eventually planned a movie (maybe in Shazam 2) where Shazam would have fought Rock Black Adam. But he refused. Said he would only fight Superman. Even though Black Adam was originally a Shazam villain. He had no connection to Superman for like 80 years. Until relatively recently

What a very weird thing to say. If anything he pigeon-holed himself into those roles. He was big enough to reject and accept any role he wanted.

He has starred in lesser and more grounded roles before like Gridiron Gang, Be Cool, Pain & Gain, Snitch and Empire State. In these movies he doesn't play an over the top super human doing crazy ass action feats. Just more straight acting so I'm confused on him saying the shit he's saying in this interview. I think he was just chasing the money and building his brand with these lifeless action movies so he can then go make these more grounded movies.

He's complaining about being pigeonholed into being nearly a billionaire when he was already wealthy before, and essentially claiming peer pressure to keep doing the same when he always had enough money to not give a shit.

Also while Im not going out of my way to defend him he has had *some* diversity to his movies. There has at least been some comedic relief with something like Tooth Fairy and then obviously the animation angle with Moana. He wasnt always an over the top action hero in all his movies. I feel like he leaned more into that later in his career than he did earlier.

I mean at least it hasnt been quite as carbon copy as say Jason Stathams career. I mean I like the guy but Christ talk about making the same movie over and over.

Oh no, he got pigeon holed into earning a couple hundred million dollars.

And hey, if you have acting chops, pull a RDJ, get an Oscar after returning to more fulfilling roles, and then go back to mega moneymakers for you.

Also, don't cultivate such an action star persona that you contractually mandate that your characters can't lose fair one on one fights.

Yes, standing ovation mean nothing, but he IS getting raves for his performance from a lot of legit critics. There is nothing to argue about here.

Admittedly, he has never shown much acting skill before, but I am willing to give him a chance here.

I think it does. In this interview he made it sound like he didn't have a choice or never had the chance to present more than being the stereotypical action hero. He's wrong which is why I find what he's saying to be non-genuine but I too look forward to this movie.

I think at least a little of this is on the Rock? I remember the rumours at the time was stuff like "Rock must be the main character" and "Rock can never lose a fight" - and IIRC that's part of the reason he got booted from the Fast/Furious movies.

I think he's right that he's being more limited in those movies, but also largely because he's the main character. As the main character, you need to carry the whole movie, and if that movie costs $200 Million, You aren't gonna be allowed to take many creative liberties.

It's not like Rock doesn't have actual acting chops. Him turning heel when he made a WWE return last year was fantastic, and he has been the lead in a 5-season long HBO show, where he was fine.

That's sort of the difference between Rock's movie career and Cena/Batista's IMO. Cena/Batista are pretty much always the supporting character instead of the main one (and even with stuff like Peacemaker, it started with Cena being a supporting character in Suicide Squad), which gives them a ton more room to do new things and show more range.

To be fair, Vin Diesel was the first to kick off the "can never lose a fight" thing in Fast & Furious. Then since he had it in his contract, Rock and Jason Statham got it in theirs, too. The whole thing became silly.

Rock got booted because him and Vin just don't like each other.

After stuff like The Rundown and Walking Tall, he did do some roles that allowed him to stretch a little more after that with Be Cool and Southland Tales and Gridiron Gang but I think after he did the two kids movies he kinda started doing the same type of roles. Really the last film he did before this new one with any kind of depth was Pain & Gain. Even in all of those, he was playing a tough guy/boxer/wrestler type character though.
