Im confused by this process. Do they think pressing it again will make elevator come faster? Im reminded of that Key & Peele sketch.

My situation escalated a bit. A womans partner forgot something and went back to their apartment. I got in the elevator, the doors were closing, but she pushed the button and stood in the middle so they wouldnt shut until he returned. She said sorry, but it was still an inconvenience. Since I was there first and now I had to wait for them over the partner issue.

Yea. I probably should have made the thread about the situation. Time has passed that I realized title was a narrow thing. The situation of the woman standing in middle of elevator doors was probably what I should have focused on.

idk, I've never done it at elevators but when I'm standing at a crosswalk I'll tap the "walk button" thing a few times while I'm waiting for it to change.

just in case the machine forgets.

People don't even want take the time to go to a crosswalk. They would rather cross into the middle of the street with jaywalking, and risk death and cause other cars to get into an accident.

It's being impatient to the max.

Its like catching pokemon int he games. Repeatedly tapping the button does nothing, but the perception of doing something instead of waiting is what gets us. So our brain makes it seem like pushing the button makes things go faster. Just a human thing.

jaywalking was an invented crime based off of a derogatory term for the poor that only became a thing because early car makers had the money to run fake stories in newspapers around the country.

blame car makers and city designers, normalizing the idea of 8 lanes of traffic moving at 40+ mph cutting through a neighborhood; nothing says 'fuck pedestrians' quite like that.

Why do people at the bus stop walk into the street and do that thing where cover their eyes as they look down the street for the bus? Doesn't make the bus go any faster.

They're not covering their eyes. They're using their hands to shield from the sun while looking to see if they can see the bus coming down the horizon.

Usually it's just a placebo effect thing, people like to feel like they're accomplishing something.

But also, yeah, the stuff in the OP is ridiculous. If the other guy has to go grab something, either meet him where you're going or get out of the fucking elevator to wait for him.

I press it many times, because I've had it pretend to clear before.

Presumably, it's a matter of the difference between C and CE. One of them clears everything and starts over, the other is just like backspacing your current number. So if you hit 30 + 9, then hit the wrong clear, then hit 10 + 2, it'll clear the 9 and give you 42 as the answer.

But what does the effing E stand for? Entire? Entry? Everything? Who the hell even knows. I can't keep them straight, so I just do both, then I go back and do them both again in the opposite order.

CE means "clear entry", as in, it only reverts the last entry you made as opposed to everything.
