I dont have any familiarity with the source material except knowing the basic premise of the game, and this movie just kinda manages to capture a lot of stuff very well. Id love to see more of this series but I kinda feel like the movie didnt do well enough? solid 8.5 film --- https://backloggery.com/cwistofu https://letterboxd.com/cwistofu/ ... Copied to Clipboard!

At the time Hasbro was trying to fuck with / monetize D&D in really scummy ways. Pissed off the entire fanbase big time. Probably didn't matter that much in regards to the movie's success, but negative goodwill never helps when you're already getting Goomba stomped by Mario at the box office. --- It's Reyn Time. ... Best gag was the super powerful heroic guy who is an obvious stand in for a DM's player character. Comes in, sets the party on the right track when they're floundering, then walks in a straight line towards the sunset Also loved the portal gun, which was an item clearly meant for the party to solve one puzzle, which they then stole and used in other situations that were probably unintended The story works great both as a self-contained fantasy story and as someone's D&D campaign --- It's Reyn Time. ... I loved it and have watched it on Paramont a few times after it left theaters. Sadly it doesn't seem like a sequel is in the cards (dice?) But I also just generally enjoy movies written and/or directed by Daley and Goldstein. Game Night is another fantastic movie of theirs that I regularly go back to. I don't know anything about Mayday or Vacation Guide to the Solar system but will watch them if only because they are behind them. --- ~C~ FD http://i.imgur.com/dGDfxaw.png ... Copied to Clipboard!

KamikazePotato posted... The story works great both as a self-contained fantasy story and as someone's D&D campaign Yup That's pretty much why it was great. I could see a lot of things that were clearly inspired by D&D campaign silliness and the characters even fit classic tropes you'd see among a lot of D&D groups. But it was also just a subtle nod and people who don't play it (I watched with 3 people who weren't) weren't taken out by it. I also just thought the Paladin was the power gamey min max player of the group rather than a DM insert which still works. --- No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! ... There's a lot of great "these people have clearly played D&D" gags in the movie. Like when the bard is struggling to get out of cuffs it's clearly supposed to be his player is just constantly failing checks. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Such a great movie. I really wish the people who wrote/made it would get the chance to make more D&D movies. They could be completely independent stories or have characters return. It was pretty good! I enjoyed all the nods to a typical campaign and I especially appreciate that its all done entirely in-universe with no cheeky nods to real life. --- https://i.imgur.com/9sOWQAf.jpeg ... Copied to Clipboard!
