step 42: remember to torque down the part to the manufacturers specifications, too loose and the part may eject from the engine during use, too tight and the thread may be stripped from the aluminum block.

Are you changing a pressed wheel bearing? No need for a hydraulic press.

With some of these newer cars you can't trust maintenance to anyone but a dealership. It's gotta be the exact type of transmission fluid, filled to an exact level and an exact temperature.

What the fuck. That's gotta be a money making racket by the car manufacturer.

It's a scam. Any decent shop will know this info. The dealership is literally the worst and most expensive place to service your car.

Like 20 years ago, I was trying to change a headlight in my car, but the old one wouldnt come out. I didnt want to yank on it super hard in case I might damage something in the process, so while I was having the oil changed, I asked the guy if he could just look at the light and tell me if I was gonna damage it if I just yanked it out. At first, he told me that would count as a service and theyd need to charge me $50 for the labor. I said Look, Ive done this before. I know that this is 15 seconds of work if done properly. Im just asking if you could look at the current bulb and tell me if it is ok to simply yank on it to pry it out.

He sorta sighed and then opened the hood, yanked it out, and said Yeah, you wont damage anything. And I sometimes just like to put a bit of lubricant on the rim of the new bulb so it doesnt stick in there when it is time to replace it.

I was happy that he didnt take the corporate stance of nickel and diming someone. That sigh from him was likely his admission of I dont wanna be the asshole here.
