The water company guy came yesterday to check out our service line and replace it for free if needed but it was fine.

But I just checked everything else out and noticed a lot of it was magnetic. Is galvanized steel typically used in old pipes? I mean there wouldn't be regular steel used for that, right?

From what I learned galvanized steel used in old homes is treated with a natural zinc coating so when they corrode the lead with the zinc ends up in the water.

Galvanized steel is a lot more corrosion resistant than regular steel. I don't know how common it is but there's nothing wrong with having it as long as it's in good condition.

Yeah, about that. There's been times where we had temporary rust in our water after having work done. Wouldn't surprise me if some of the pipes were 100 years old.

Could be worse, you could have lead pipes if your house is old enough.
