Something that may sound counterintuitive is to ignore everything but what's immediately around your ship. If you just focus on dodging bullets and don't even care about whether you are hitting your target or not you can tend to survive a lot longer. If you can pick a weapon upgrade that auto aims, even better.

You don't get good at shoot 'em ups.

You get good at a single STG, one game at a time.

Real answer: find a game you love and play the crap out of it. I like Xevious, Ikaruga, Mushihimesama, Do Don Pachi, etc.

Oh yea, the most important part is save state training. You have to use save states to train and learn bosses. If you can't get over this you'll never be good at these games.

4-5 hours grinding a boss and you probably have it down. Grind all the bosses and all the problem parts, then try to put it all together into a run.
