BERLIN Germany will suspend arms exports to Israel that could be used in the Gaza Strip, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced Friday, marking Berlins clearest shift yet in response to Israels escalating military campaign.

Under these circumstances, the German government will, until further notice, not approve any exports of military equipment that could be used in the Gaza Strip, Merz said in a government press release. He added that Israels intensified operations in Gaza approved by its Cabinet overnightmake it increasingly difficult to see how stated goals like the release of hostages or the disarmament of Hamas can be achieved.

The move stops short of a full weapons embargo and leaves open the possibility of continued exports for systems unrelated to the Gaza campaign, such as missile defense or naval equipment.

That's a big deal for Germany. Though the conditional language is a bit concerning. (We'll only give you weapons you can use for self-defence, but not in Gaza).

Let's hope the rest of the world can bring themselves to do the right thing. Pictures of children being deliberately starved to death by the Israeli government seems to represent a line they crossed

Huge. Israel is basically a sacred cow in Germany due to lingering cultural guilt over the Holocaust. For Germany to publicly break with Israel like this is a massive shift.

It's wild that it took this level of unapologetic genocide for countries to go "Maybe we should consider not giving you as many weapons a bit down the line perhaps after some careful consideration and negociation."

"that can be used in Gaza". How will they decide which can or can't? Even a gun can be used by a soldier in Gaza.

Sounds sus to me. Like "look at us! We are doing something!" While not really doing something.

So this is a symbolic announcement, not truly substantive. The only effective move is a total weapons embargo.

You assume there will be a moment where the world will "come around" to ending it, but the scarier (and increasingly more likely) alternative is that they simply don't. That Israel completes the genocide in full.

And then the world will say, 'maybe if we had all the facts at the time, we could have done something. But, oh well, it's too late now'.

Which has been the position they have been working towards all along.

Germany has not changed its stance. It recognizes Israel's right to exist and supports its right to self-defense.

However, this does not mean that it approves of all the Israeli government's actions.

The Israeli government's actions are not well received in Germany either. The export ban is an attempt to put pressure on the Israeli government to take a different path.

I don't think it will achieve anything, but given that Israel is a sensible topic in Germany, it's better than nothing.
