One day an employee tells you that their pet cat has died and they request a week off work to deal with the bereavement.

How do you react?
Would you grant it?

A family member's cat died last winter. They were pretty distraught over it, honestly. They were acting different for a while.

sure.

I forget the state, but they ruled that a dog can legally be considered a member of the family, so why not cats.

Unless there's state laws on the matter, compassionate leave is not federal law in the US. Companies can refuse to grant it

I'd grant them compassionate leave, but not a week. 2 days sounds appropriate to me: 1 day for practical things, dealing with the death process. 1 day for a bit of time to decompress.

if they wanted more than 2 days, the rest could be from annual holiday leave or if they're really distressed then sick leave.

is it wesley? is wesley requesting the leave? i'd give it to him...

honestly though sure i'd do it, but realistically most bosses aren't going to give you a week off for a dead pet. hell my mom wasn't even given a day off for her dead father, she had to beg a co-worker to cover her shift so she could make the funeral.

I love my pets, both present and past, but losing any of them is a day off at most for any sane person, maybe two.

If they want personal days off, go ahead if they have them. Not getting extra for them compared to losing a child, parent, sibling, or other close relative.

I just had to put one of my two dogs down on Wednesday. Took most of that day off (only knew it would happen after we talked to the vet that morning, knew it was coming but not exactly when). Id certainly let someone else do the same. As for a week, cant say for sure either way. Could at least consider it.

My dogs were my entire world. When I put my boy down in July of 2019 I did on my weekend. Spent one last full day with him really really soaking it in though I spent every day with him you know what I mean. The next morning put him down on my day off. Was a fucking wreck. Tried to go to work the next day and got there and everyone just acting normal and chit chatting and laughing just made me realize I couldn't deal with it yet and had to leave. Took vacation and left. Came back the next day.

I don't want to say I was "over him" being gone but two full days of decompression away from people was enough for me to tolerate being back to work at least enough to function though I was still a little quiet and not really engaging for a few days but I could at least function enough to do my job and not be too fucked up to be around other people who were acting normal.

Again my dogs were my entire world for 13 years and with the exception of the night they stayed over for getting fixed were with me every single day and never apart. They were my everything and I still miss them. So I think a couple days are appropriate but I would also think most people would want to take care of this on their day off anyway.

on topic, i would offer 2 days at best to process the situation. a week is asking too much.

it took 9 months to get over a pet loss. at times there's sadness and the guilt that plagued having to do that.

People process grief differently. I think it's pretty shitty to suggest someone should be past their grief in x amount of time. Some take longer than others and quite frankly, very few occupations are worth sacrificing your personal affairs for. Life before work.

If you have the vacation time or want to take the time off work, feel free. Losing a pet can be very hard.

My first dog gutted me when he passed suddenly at a young age. I wasnt myself for weeks.

As I get older it doesnt necessarily get easier, Ive just become familiar with the grieving process and found keeping busy helps me work through it.

Its different for everyone.

My supervisor is hoping we can do just that if she's not back before the end of August.

I presume there might have been some legitimate cause at first, but unless she's getting her spine replaced I don't think it justifies how long she's been gone.

I grant them the request but I tell them I'm only paying for what I'm legally required to. So if bereavement leave law allows for any time off in case of a deceased pet then they can get compensated for the time. If they have PTO or vacation time then they can use that too.

If they have vacation/sick time saved no problem. I don't care who died, just "Death in the family" and you can use your time at the moment's notice, no questions asked.

But if they don't have the time saved, I'm not giving extra time for a pet.

If they want to take an unpaid leave I'd be willing to work with them.

I never understood the logic in denying leave requests. Either I take the time off and come back to work when done, or....I quit and you lose an employee. Even if it's an easily replaceable position it's a headache to onboard someone new and train them up.

I'd give 1-2 days, not a week.

I would like to be more compassionate but I need people to work. Either that or the work won't get finished, and then the managers would have a breakdown. Not to mention more stress for everyone.

However I might be abnormal. I would rather work. I don't think I could stand having time off while in mourning. I'd rather be busy.

2 days sounds fair to me, the rest can come out of their PTO/sick days or unexcused absences, however they want to divvy that up.

Though I might advise against too much time off because sitting around at home reminiscing or ruminating too much can make it hard(er) to work through the grieving process. Not saying they should work to avoid dealing with grief but if all they're doing is sitting around then a week off might not be the best thing for them. Or they can break up the work flow after the first two days. 2 off, 1-2 on , 1-2 off, etc. Just so they can get into a routine without the pet.
