Statements published over the weekend by New York elected officials mark a tonal shift in how Democrats are addressing Israel and the conflict in Gaza, with Israels allies sharpening their criticism of the country.

Democrats who once avoided public criticism of Israeli policy may now feel compelled to speak out amid the worsening starvation crisis. Another factor may be the political upset by Zohran Mamdani, a strident critic of Israel, in the New York City mayoral race.

Rep. Ritchie Torres, one of Israels most outspoken allies in Congress, called for an end to the war and said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahus leadership was causing irreparable damage to the U.S.-Israel relationship. New York Attorney General Tish James led a letter signed by dozens of state and city lawmakers that blasted Israels military strategy and called for sustained, unrestricted humanitarian aid to enter Gaza.

The images coming out of Gaza, along with the growing outspokenness of the Democratic electorate on the issue in a longtime pro-Israel stronghold, make it harder for politicians to continue to embrace Israel without any criticism or distance, said Abe Foxman, the former longtime head of the Anti-Defamation League.

Polls show that Democratic voters are increasingly sympathetic to Palestinians. In a recent Quinnipiac survey, just 12% of Democrats sympathize more with Israelis in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Last month, 56% of voters in the Democratic mayoral primary picked Mamdani, a democratic socialist with a history of activism against Israel, as their nominee. Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor and Mamdanis chief rival, suggested that for many younger and progressive voters, Mamdanis criticism of Israel may have been an asset rather than a vulnerability.

Halie Soifer, the chief executive of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, rejected the idea of a watershed moment in the Democratic Partys stance on Israel. Democrats continue to support the vital security relationship between our two countries, including U.S. military assistance, she said.

What has changed, Soifer said, is the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza that has many concerned. Supporters and friends of Israel, just like the majority of Jewish American voters, can hold two truths at once: we are both deeply invested in Israels future as a Jewish and democratic state and critical of some policies of the current Israeli government, she said.
...
Others see the shift in rhetoric as a sign of the times, which require a more principled approach.

Amy Spitalnick, the CEO of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, said the war coupled with the rise of antisemitism since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel has created the space for a complex and principled critique of Israeli policy.

It has far less to do with domestic politics in the United States than with the geopolitical landscape and the urgency of responding to that in a way that remains true to core values, which includes Israels security and a commitment to the dignity and rights of all people, she said.

Torres is a progressive Democrat who has, since his election to Congress in 2020, been a vocal defender of Israel and endorsed Cuomo in the mayoral primary. [Antifar's note: some of the facts in this sentence feel mutually exclusive] He addressed criticism of Israel among Democrats on Sunday Night With Chuck Todd on Noosphere.

He blamed it on Netanyahu, whose public rift with former President Barack Obama over the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran caused irreparable damage to Israels relationship with the Democratic Party.

When you inject yourself into partisan politics and put your thumb on the scale in favor of one political party, that sets a dangerous precedent, Torres said. And I believe that the consequences of that political geopolitical calculation continue to reverberate till this day.

Ronn Torossian, a public relations executive and philanthropist, who bundled hundreds of thousands for Torres after Oct. 7, said he severed ties with the congressman over his recent statements.

Sadly, Ritchie Torres no longer stands with the State of Israel, he said. Its clear that hes very concerned about his future in the Democratic Party. Torres recently returned personal contributions from Torossian and entrepreneur Michael Sinensky, following a report about their ties to Trump and the Likud party in Israel.

Sadly, its clear that whether it is changing times or political expediency, his love for the Jewish people is limited to a love of a left-wing Jewish government, Torossian said.

Some commentators described Mamdanis election last month as a broader political realignment which has led to concern among some Democrats about it opening the door to strident criticism of Israel. Where criticism was seen as a political risk, it is now becoming part of the partys mainstream discourse.

National Jewish Democrats, like Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and former Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel both considered as possible presidential candidates in 2028 criticized Mamdani for dodging calls from Democratic colleagues and Jewish organizations to condemn the use of the globalize the intifada slogan.

Foxman cautioned against reading too much into Mamdanis win. Its not the Mamdani effect per se as a political force, he said. He has not yet been tested beyond the primary. But the events in Gaza help his narrative.

Sara Forman, the executive director of the New York Solidarity Network, said the pro-Israel community supports criticism of Israels government as part of a healthy democracy. She said she sees no indication of a change in the partys pro-Israel stance. The majority of the elected officials who are speaking out now are really doing so because they want to see an end to the war, and they want to see a return of the hostages, Forman said. Thats whats driving this more than anything else.

Ritchie Torres!

Columbia is going to have to backtrack and apologize to all the student protestors and still have their reputation ruined.

only a 1/3 polled now approve of the current IDF actions, 8% of dems support Israel in the war

https://news.gallup.com/poll/692948/u.s.-back-israel-military-action-gaza-new-low.aspx
32% in U.S. Back Israel's Military Action in Gaza, a New Low
WASHINGTON, D.C. Americans approval of Israels military action in Gaza has fallen 10 percentage points since the prior measurement in September, and it is now at 32%, the lowest reading since Gallup first asked the question in November 2023. Disapproval of the military action has now reached 60%.

These findings are from a July 7-21, 2025, Gallup poll, as Israels campaign against Hamas stretched into its 21st month. Americans supported Israels actions in Gaza in its initial reading in 2023, taken several weeks after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. Since then, disapproval has outpaced approval in each survey, peaking at 55% in March 2024 before dipping to 48% in two readings later in the year.

Americans Sharply Divided by Party Over Israels Actions
The decline in approval is driven by 16-point drops among both Democrats and independents. As has been the case since the start of the conflict, independents (25%) express higher approval than Democrats (8%), but both groups currently register their lowest readings to date. In contrast, 71% of Republicans say they approve of Israels action in Gaza, up from 66% in September.

Approval of Israels Military Action in Iran Slightly Higher Than in Gaza
The July survey also asked about support for Israels military action targeting suspected nuclear enrichment and military sites in Iran. Currently, 38% of Americans express approval of this military action; 54% disapprove. Seventy-eight percent of Republicans, 31% of independents and 12% of Democrats approve.

While estimates differ on how much the attack set back Irans ability to develop a nuclear weapon, concerns that the action, which included a military assist from the U.S., could spark a wider war have not materialized.

Netanyahu Rated Unfavorably by Majority of Americans for First Time
Fifty-two percent of Americans now view Benjamin Netanyahu unfavorably, his highest unfavorable rating since 1997. His favorable rating stands at 29%, while 19% of U.S. adults have no opinion of him.
Until December 2023, Americans viewed Netanyahu more positively than negatively, except in 1997, when he was less well known. In the December 2023 poll, Netanyahus unfavorable rating far outpaced his 33% favorable rating, with the current poll showing a continued deterioration in his image.
Netanyahus unfavorable rating has roughly doubled since 2019, the last reading before the start of the current conflict. The increase in unfavorability has been accompanied by roughly equal decreases in his favorable rating (down 11 points) and the percentage with no opinion of the Israeli leader (down 14 points).

During the polls field period, Netanyahu visited the U.S. to meet with President Donald Trump and other political leaders. Although the Trump administration continued its efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Netanyahu left Washington without such a deal.
Republicans continue to have a broadly positive opinion of the conservative Israeli prime minister. Two-thirds of Republicans, 67%, now have a favorable opinion of Netanyahu, compared with 19% of independents and 9% of Democrats. While Republicans have held a consistently more favorable opinion of Netanyahu than Democrats and independents throughout the trend, the current 58-point party gap is the largest.

Republicans opinions of Netanyahu are similar to their views in 2019, which was Gallups last reading prior to the Oct. 7 attacks, while Democrats and independents ratings of him are sharply worse.

Demographic Differences in Views of Netanyahu, Israels Military Action
Partisans differences in support for Netanyahu and Israels military action in both Gaza and Iran are reflected in significant differences by gender, age, race and ethnicity. Men, White adults, and those aged 55 and older are more likely than their counterparts to view Netanyahu favorably and approve of Israels military action in Gaza and Iran.

Bottom Line
Americans support for Israels military operation in Gaza and their positive views of Netanyahu have both reached new lows, reflecting sharp declines in Democrats and independents support. At the same time, Republicans backing of Israels military action and its prime minister is holding firm, resulting in record partisan gaps on both. The increasingly skeptical and divided American public poses a challenge for Israeli leadership and U.S. policymakers who are seeking to navigate the conflict.

Agreed. I mean hopefully in 4 years Democrats will be in power and can stop this.

But if we're at full genocide already, 4 years is forever away.

How many men, women and children will die over the next 4 years because Americans did nothing to stop the crisis last year?
