AI CSAM is real CSAM, that's how the technology works. My point is both are crimes against humanity and should be outlawed. Unlike indie games which use the subject for artistic reasons, those should be allowed to be freely sold no matter what Visa thinks.

AI is definitely a gray area in "everything fictional is okay" because it can't be prevented from using anything in the datasets it's given, including real people's likenesses.

I believe generative AI should be illegal period, but that's an entirely different conversation to have.

Even if it is a losing battle, like they want us to believe and are spending an awful lot of money and energy to convince us so, it's a fight worth having.

Images of real kids (and likely real CSAM) are taken to be used in data training and can reappear in the output. Deepfake porn is rightfully considered a violation of a human being even if it's not really them, this is no different.

I think we can agree that whatever (if any) moderation would be appropriate it should be the platform moderating themselves, and not the payment processing service imposing it's will unilaterally.

ACLU is getting involved. Articles being published in The Guardian. Mainstream media getting involved. News that Visa has started to yell and hang up on customers out of frustration as call volumes have increased daily rather than sanding off.

This is moving much faster than the OnlyFans stuff from a few years back.

It's going to be really funny when the payment processors reverse course but itch and Steam don't.

Itch will do it, they've already said they're looking for alternate payment methods as it is that will allow them to put almost everything back up, so I can't imagine they wouldn't just do so if the companies backed off (though they'd almost certainly still keep looking for alternate methods for the future).

There have been a lot of super unreasonable people poking their heads out for this in regards to Itch themselves. There was some fake fiasco about Mouthwashing being pulled down even though it was NEVER for sale on itch and that page always just linked to Steam, and when Itch clarified the first response from the person who started it was "whatever you're still a bitch". Get real people.

I hope you're right but their actions so far have been pretty inexcusable so I'm expecting the worst. But you're more informed about it than me since I didn't even know they were looking for alternate payment processors (maybe a good thing to have included in their initial statement??)

Edit: just read their July 28th update and it's a lot better than their initial statement so yeah now I do think it's likely they restore (almost?) all deindexed content

I don't think Itch should be exactly applauded for this situation so far but they do seem to be more open to working with creators affected than most other places

Definitely not applauded, they came out swinging very poorly, but I think it's likely at this point that was mostly then getting shock and awed with a message to the tune of "take this stuff down within 24 hours or we're pulling the plug on the whole site".

You're talking about the overton window shifting massively, which it definitely has, but it's very important to understand that it doesn't change morality at all. You know your morals and you are not beholden to the overton window or to any activist or any billionaire PAC campaign. So many people give up and choose to change their morals to follow the latest trends out of convenience, or fear of being ostracized, and it is literally killing themselves and society.

My opinion doesn't matter, the fact is 1 week ago before the online rage machine was turned on, no one would've considered any of itch's actions unreasonable. If you subscribe to the rage machine, you're the one at fault and you need to justify your position, not vice versa.

pretty easy stance for GOG to take since they don't have very many games with adult content!

They could have ditched what they do have to play it safe for the same reason, but yes, this move is not only easy but good for business.

Don't give GOG that much praise for this, they changed course on having Devotion on their store in less than 24 hours because they were afraid of China
