Seems these things are always broken in every house I've ever been in across the country

No, I'm not an ice maker repairman.

There's a lot of moving parts and things that can break, and appliance companies try to cut every corner as possible on price so yeah. I'm not shocked they break so frequently.

Samsung ones for sure are garbage. We have to stand there with the fridge wide open and towels everywhere to deice it with a hair dryer for at least 30 minutes every couple weeks if we want to use it.

I did this for two years on my brand new Samsung fridge.

Now it just doesn't make ice at all.

I generally avoid Samsung. I still find myself liking their phones but every other product they put out seems to be shit. Outside of maybe TVs, but I feel like they are overpriced. I had a family member buy a new top of the line Samsung washer and that thing broke in like 1.5 years and was entirely out of warranty and they were SOL.

I dont know if mine even works any more to be honest. I gave up maintainingit a couple years ago and no one else in the house wanted to do it themselves so we went back to using ice trays. Last time I tried to open it it was so frozen I couldnt even pull the bucket out so I probably need to unplug the fridge and just let it all melt to fix it at this point.

External ice markers are worse than internal ones.

Go for internal if you care about reliability.

It also depends on the brand too.

My house had all Samsung appliances. After replacing half of them so far and after looking up issues before replacing them, it seems to consensus is that Samsung electronics are good, appliances are absolute dog shit. Both are very overpriced.

I did quite a bit of research before buying my washer/dryer, fridge, and dishwasher and the online consensus was always that Samsung should stick to phones

Disgusting symptom of post 90s sales industry.

Why would we compete by selling good products? When we could just all sell shit products and make more money?

My parents have a freezer from 1974 and the thing Is a BEAST. it will freeze rock solid anything within a couple of hours.

The fridge is 26 years old and the ice maker has been continuously pushing out ice nonstop for a quarter of a damn century with no signs of slowing.

They got forced to get a new oven in 2013. Have had a repair man come out like 4 times for it. Just ridiculous. One repair man flat out told him. Anything that is old just PAY TO FIX IT. New stuff is trash. I don't dou'bt even the really expensive ones re shit.

my family never owned a fridge that had a worker ice maker, or an ice maker at all. we just use ice trays. all we have ever owned were cheap second-hand old fridges, cuz of being poor.

but i don't mind too much, because every time in my life i've been at someone's house who has an ice maker and i had something to drink with those ice cubes, they both smell and taste funky in a way that the person whose house it is doesn't seem to notice cuz they're used to it.

I came in to mention them specifically.

In my life I've had two fridges with an in-door and two with the trough.

Never had a single problem with either of the trough ones, the in-door ones froze up all the goddamn time.

I think it's just the simplified system, having the extra connections and the less predictable temperature just complicates shit too much.

I nominate those stupid Google Home smart speakers. My parents decided to fill the house with them because they wanted to feel like they live in Star Trek, and they've made things a living Hell. Always chiming in when they're not wanted, and it takes them four or five tries to get it to realize "oh you want me to turn the lights on/off" when it would be so much faster and easier to just flip the god damn switch.
