Haven't played it, tbh.

I don't think I'd outright dislike it, but I don't really forsee myself being enamored with it because I'm not a particular fan of racing games nowadays

I remember playing it when young, cant really recall much on it, it does get overshadowed by 64 and other Mario karts

I started with MK64, but I have played SMK enough to say...

It's super dated and I don't think I ever really "got good" at MK until Double Dash, but I did play the hell out of it and love it

Yes. It's obviously pretty limited since it's basically faking 3D using mode 7, but I think it works well.

It's still the best Mario Kart tbh.

I certainly appreciate it for paving the way for its far better later installments, but not a fan of the original.

I wouldn't argue that it's objectively the best in the series, but it's definitely my favorite.

Loved it when it came out.

I would definitely argue every game without blue shells is better than every game with blue shells.

And I'm talking, Pac-Man, Ape Escape, Miss It, Rock Paper Scissors, Hide and Seek, all better than any Mario Kart with blue shells.

Literally the pettiest mechanic there is. If it does impossibly unspeakable catastrophic damage to the target, congrats, you go from last place to second-to-last place. That's the best thing that can happen to you if you use a blue shell. You'd have to perpetually be in second place to not be as enraged about this crap as I am.

I mean it's not a bad game, but I played it after MK64 so there's really no comparison.

Man, the control is so rough. It isn't even just a side effect of being an old racing game - lots of them (including the original F-Zero, for the same console and by most of the same people) still control great.

I never got why the poison mushroom wasn't one of the regular items you could get. It's obviously already programmed into the game if the computer can use it.

It's overhated and much better than 64, double dash, and any of the handheld karts.

Yeah I still play it with my family every now and then. Easy fun

Eh the GBA one is worse imo. The harsh graphics make it way more of a pain to even play. I agree it has aged very poorly though.

Honestly? Nah. I never owned it and don't have the best memories playing it with friends. The series didn't come into its own until MK64, which I bought day 1, absolutely adored, and played the hell out of.

I don't even think it was a particularly exciting game for its time. I'd rather replay the Micromachines game.
Ok battle mode, but that's it. I think the carts were better balanced since traction actually mattered.

I remember in the 2000s, it was considered the best Mario Kart here on GameFAQs, but I never understood why. I started on MK64, and it was far-and-away a better game compared to SMK. The physics and overall jank of the SNES title made it very unapproachable for me, especially when starting out with a Mario Kart that used an analog stick for steering. Mario Kart 64 is still in the top 3, while Super Mario Kart feels like a decrepit relic of the past.

Ironically, F-Zero on the SNES aged a lot better and is still very great to play. Nintendo did weird things with SMK's controls making it frustrating and sluggish.

I like it. Beating 100cc let alone 150cc is a real challenge that pushes you to master the controls, which are definitely rough but once you learn how drifting works (and you unlearn how physics in later Mario Karts work) its a treat.

Its far from perfect, but I can still play it today and have a good time. Battle Mode is also pretty fun here with a buddy.

I have fond memories, sure. Then again, I would play it on XBAND with local friends. If you think its a dated, unplayable mess now, hoo boy, you aint seen nothin.

Kid me played the bullshit out of this game and used to consistently win over my brother, my sister and my dad.

Definitely have a very hard time trying to play it in modern times though.
