Snowball Fight #31: Cambodia - Squall Leonhart

Ritz and Ruehlam sat waiting at Mustadio's Garage, while Mustadio gave the midnight black Corolla a new paint job. Ritz decided that she'd change the car to the original glory of hers - a hot pink ride with license plate SNWBLL, since she was confident enough at this point that she had plot protection. Between the repeated breaking of the fourth wall, and the arrival of Ruehlam to help her with her nefarious deeds, her confidence was high, without reaching the point of being cocky. She understood that she needed to at least retain some degree of humility, so she wouldn't get caught offguard by something unexpected.

As she was thinking about not getting caught unexpectedly, a young man carrying a gun... sword... thing... walked in, stopping alive in his tracks because he wasn't dead, and thus could not stop dead. Not dead yet at least. "...It's you!" he exclaimed rather unexcitedly through his aloof demeanor. "I've finally found you. I've been following your trail of bodies since you killed Quistis. Picking up the breadcrumbs, reading the messages of the dearly departed, and now it's time for you to face judgment for your crimes. You've killed too many of my compatriots to get away this time. I've lost Quistis, I've lost Seifer, and I've lost Cid. It's up to me to stop you before it's too late."

"Quistis huh? Oh yeah she was the one who brought checkers pieces to a game of chess." responded Ritz blithely. She actually recognized this man as Squall Leonhart, because she had canonically been listening to The Extreme during one of her first drives.

As Ritz spoke, Squall wracked his mind trying to make sense of the scene in front of him. There wasn't just one Ritz, there were two. In any case, Squall was prepared to do the only thing he could. "It was Triple Triad, not chess, and it's time for me to take you down in it once and for all." he said to Ritz.

"I... uh... what?" Ritz said confusedly. She thought this guy was here to try to take her out but he just wanted to play a card game? This might just be the most benign revenge plot she'd ever seen. "Whatever man. You do you."

"Hey, "Whatever" is my line." interjected Squall.

"Whatever." responded Ritz.

The two of them had gone to a table outside and prepared their cards for the game of triple triad, Ruehlam watching from the side, unnerving Squall. The final battle. The ultimate battle of ultimate destiny. The pinnacle of cardplaying. The apex of anticlimaxes. Squall was a man of honour, and diligently chose the strongest cards, while as against Quistis, Ritz grabbed random ones, replacing her Rikku card with something even stronger and more thematically appropriate than Uno Reverse.

The advantage in the first few rounds alternated back and forth between each of Ritz and Squall. Turns were had and cards were played, beads of sweat rolling down Squall's face, and only his face, because Ritz knew that she once again had this in the bag regardless of his tactical maneuvering. Each of them were down to their final cards - the stakes remaining high. Squall threw down his Rikku card in anticipation of victory but before he could say anything, Ritz declared "You've activated my Trap Card!".

Squall had absolutely no idea what that meant given that it wasn't a part of regular Triple Triad, but in his befuddlement he saw a card played on the table - Ice Dragon's Prison. Despite the text on the card suggesting something else entirely, it began to glow an icy blue and suddenly a barrage of snowballs flew out of the card at angles which definitely didn't defy the laws of physics. Squall stood up and stumbled back from the flurry, until he hit the wall behind him. He was slowly encased in a layer of snowballs that packed on top of each other until a glimmer of light flashed over the snow and turned it into a giant block of ice. Did he die by hypothermia? Blunt force trauma? Suffocation? Only the coroner would know.

Shortly thereafter, Ritz heard a shout from inside indicating that Mustadio was finished with his work. She went inside, grabbed the keys and brought the car around to where ex-Squall was sitting frozen. Ruelham helped her put the block of ice in the trunk, where it stuck out awkwardly since it was too big for the tailgate to close. They drove a few miles before dumping the body in a ditch, hoping that this was the last person they'd meet who was on their tail. It's always easier to catch someone by surprise.

Still beautiful to see that run from CXIV to CXXII every time

And aw yeah still above 90% for one more year

Great run for Squall getting back to top ten. Sorry, Leon! Helped him when I could early on in the contest but Ive been locked into trying to give Rikku a chance at a run.

I'm glad Ritz won for plot reasons. Congrats to Squall too though, top ten is quite the feat for a former champ. I enjoyed the Quistis/Squall Triple Triad fics too.

It's fitting that while Squallfics were building up to defeat Ritz, Squall's death is just another run of the mill day from Ritz' perspective.

Yeah Leon thanks for inspiring me and then doing the crossover episodes as things went on. Youve got a great, far less unhinged, writing style and it was fun reading them. Looking forward to what you cook up next time!

The Quisits/Squall and Ritz fanfics have been very fun. I do wish the Quisits and Red XIII storyline that had been starting to build was able to go further but even that had a fun time for the time it had

I'm glad Quistis got booted early to give Squall fics more time to cook. The stories (both-- Ritz fic interest for me got fed by Squall fic crossover) got way better once it was Squall + Seifer.

Fine, next year I'll just have Quistis eat everybody and learn a Blue Magic spells from them

Turning Quistis into Quina sounds bold

Devour is a critical part of FFVIII lore

I'm not saying Quistis was bad I'm just saying you can tell Squall and even Seifer are closer to your heart

I think Quistis works better as a supporting character. It's difficult to write her as the lead, especially without any other FFVIII characters to play off of. I do think her story with Rinoa was probably my best Quistis one because it's fairly easy to write a scene of the two of them just having a friendly conversation. I just know the kinds of things they'd say to each other.

Of course I could just throw canon out the window and have her eat people, too. Something else to consider.

You have to take liberties with her characterization to make her a lead I think. It's not so much that she works better as a supporting character as much as she isn't fleshed out enough with characteristics that she can really be a main very easily. You gotta kinda extrapolate.

Yeah, but I was also writing a story where there isn't a lot of opportunity to branch out and take risks without changing the scope of the story (which I eventually did). It was intended to be a fairly safe venture where I could just make silly references and have fun with the characters. I didn't really plan for it to become more than that, mostly because I didn't anticipate a rival story. I could've had the Quistis story cross over with the Ritz story sooner and have probably done more with her.

Yeah I get that. Wasn't intended as criticism as much as just kinda understanding why Quistis presents hurdles to deal with.

Yeah, I know. This is also helping me talk through it and figure out how it could have been better.

SMFFFCC Card Club Final Match

Squall awoke after being brutally attacked by Ritz, or at least he thought he had. He searched for his wounds, but he couldn't find any. It didn't make sense. Had she healed him? That would be very out of character for her, but unless someone else had managed to find him in time (which was unlikely), there was no other explanation.

In fact, it felt like nothing made sense. Despite the fact that Ritz was a brutal serial killer who had just tried to kill him, he found himself feeling strangely sympathetic toward her. Something wasn't adding up. He didn't know Ritz at all, but at the same time, he suddenly felt like he knew her better than anyone. This crime spree was totally out of character for her, too. What could be the explanation for it?

Squall sat up straight in an instant. He had figured it out. Ritz was being possessed by a sorceress far into the future. Yes, that was it. Ritz hadn't done anything wrong. It was this random sorceress from potentially thousands of years into the future, whom Squall didn't want to learn anything about. After all, she was a convenient scapegoat. It wouldn't do to humanize her too much. You definitely wouldn't want her to be someone the hero knows without him recognizing who it is. That would totally subvert the game's themes of Love and Succession of Witches (and Squall knew these were the themes because that's what FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC actually meant. It was an anagram for Love and Succession of Witches, not Latin. This isn't Final Fantasy VII). After all, how can there be a succession of witches if there's only one witch?

There was only one thing left for Squall to do. He had to find Ritz and take her into outer space. After chasing her down, he carried her on his shoulders all the way to a secret hidden high-tech city, which naturally had a space center with capsules capable of shooting them up to their moon base. Crazy things happened while they were up in space. Squall had to jump out there and rescue Ritz after she fell out of the space station, but they conveniently found a dragon airship that allowed them to return to the planet's surface. However, they also accidentally unleashed a swarm of monsters from the moon. Whoops!

But all this craziness had made Squall realize one thing: He had fallen in love with Ritz. In fact, he swore to be her knight, even if she became the world's enemy. That actually sounded kinda cool, but instead they just used time kompression shenanigans to travel to the castle of the future sorceress (who shall not be named. Remember: no humanizing allowed), where Squall killed her and got lost in time. Fortunately, Ritz summoned a field of flowers and they were both saved.

Afterwards, they had this big celebration, and everyone that Ritz had killed (except it wasn't really her, it was the future sorceress who was now dead) was at the party cheering on their love. One of them brought a video camera and secretly caught them about to make out, which would've made them go super viral on whatever FFVIII's popular social media site was at the time, but then the batteries died.

But of course, none of this actually happened, not just because it is silly and nonsensical, but because, as everyone knows...Squall dies at the end of D(ay)isc (9)1.
