It was meh. Not bad, but not the strong foot I was hoping they'd put forward for a franchise reboot. Of my criticisms, Superman spending half the film on his back sucking wind instead of being on his feet doing Superman things is chief. He felt like the least useful character in his own movie. His cousin's dog did more heavy lifting than he did. Another complaint I have is the handling of Superman's parents. They're supposed to be the bedrock of his moral values, but the attempt to show this fell flat in part because they had so little screentime and in part because they were introduced as what I assume was supposed to be comic relief. I'd be remiss if I didn't point out how silly the plot was. The antagonist's master plan is to arm a country to facilitate the conquest of their neighbor. Said conquest consists of...[checks notes]...about a hundred infantry and a few armored vehicles? I'm to believe they're going to invade, let alone occupy, a foreign nation with such a flimsy force? Related to this - and I'll preface this by admitting I'm no comic book aficionado - Lex Luthor plotting to become king of a foreign country (I know the movie states this to be a pretense) rather than running for political office in his own country struck me as a very un-Lex Luthor kind of move. Again, the movie isn't bad. But it wasn't great, either. I wouldn't say it was any better than, say, Blue Beetle. Given that this is both the IPs most iconic figure and the franchise's reboot, it needed to be better than Blue Beetle. ... Copied to Clipboard!

I mean, its very possible were seeing just a small part of the invasion. I highly doubt the entire thing is happening on that tiny bit of land. And what was wrong with the Kents? Theyve always been portrayed as simple, loving country folk who are wiser than they let on. I think that was shown well with Pa Kent. When he told Clark that his parents (and that includes the Kents) dont have a right to tell him what kind of man he is, and that only HE gets to choose who he wants to be before tearfully telling him how proud he is. Thats Pa Kent. Not that asshole in MoS who told Clark he should have let a bus load of kids drown just to cover his own ass I genuinely cant believe people are complaining about Lex when Hoult arguably gave the best and most comic accurate performance in the entire film. --- Hope rides alone ... Somehow I missed this topic yesterday, so Im just going to copy my post from another one: I saw it today in an empty screening. Honestly, didnt love it overall. Theres stuff to like about it. Lex is played really well and hes legitimately really f***ing evil. Guy Gardner is handled well, and I liked how they handled his parents message. However, Krypto is annoying and a much larger part of the film than he should be. It felt like theres a certain assumption that the audience is already familiar with all these characters. And while thats fair for the likes of Superman, Lex and the Daily Planet people, Id say less so for some of the others. I think the most disasapointing element for me was that, in Guardians, Gunn is quite good at alternating between silly humour and more genuine, heartfelt moments. I mean, he made people cry about a violent genius CGI raccoon with the third film, which I think is a huge achievement. But here, it just doesnt work as well. Some of the jokes fall flat and the moments that are meant to carry any sort of emotional weight often dont. Also, so many people in this topic seem to want the message to have been doctored. A sequel should never retroactively make the prior film worse, and revealing that the message isnt genuine would do that. ... Copied to Clipboard!
