I am morbidly curious as to how the GOP will react to Trump's death.

The optimistic take is that nobody will be able to replicate Trump's cult of personality and the party will struggle with splintering factions.

But the world has beaten even the slightest inclination for optimism out of me so I assume Trump is going to basically be the Jesus of the right. GOP will talk about him in the same context that they talk about Jesus or God. "We're doing what Trump would've wanted. I ask myself, what would Trump have done? Trump is smiling on you from heaven."

And it'll work.

Every month it seems his dementia is steadily progressing more and more so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't have much longer to live but I also wouldn't be surprised if he stays alive for many years to come.

Part of the reason Trump has been able to get away with as much as he has is that he has enough of a sway over enough of the Republican base that almost all Republicans in Congress are afraid to defy him. That wouldn't be the case with Vance.

I don't think anybody's saying a Vance presidency would be good. Plenty of bad stuff would still happen. But he wouldn't have the same ability to get the rest of the party to fall in line that Trump does. There would be a lot more infighting in the Republican party which could hamper at least some of what Vance might try to do.

If Republicans still control the House and/or Senate: they'll just block everything the Democrat president tries to do
If Democrats control the House and Senate: there's a chance they'll be too spineless and just focus on the platitude of "moving forward" while still trying to reach across the aisle.
