Hand and Dan have the same a sound to my knowledge, like handy dandy.

Same with pen and ten. I could be wrong though.

So many people type "then" for both uses. It would mindflood me in the strangest way if those same people knew to pronounce them differently despite spelling them the same way.

In what accent? Only one that comes to mind is a super thick southern drawl and even then there's a really subtle difference.

They are spelled differently, with letters that arent silent, and different sounding letters. I could understand why someone would pronounce them the way, if they usually have difficulty speaking and slur their words etc normally. Similar to Sock/Hawk how most people pronounce those differently

Sometimes they do sound the same. Every vowel in English has more than one pronunciation and there is overlap between some.
