Usually if a break is long enough, a player will simply start over because they've forgotten details and stuff.

But what's the longest gap/break you've ever had in a story-based game where you DIDN'T start over?

I think I took an almost year long break in the middle of Persona 5 the first time...

Now I do just start games over if it's been too long... Or just never pick them up again because of the dread of starting over or being lost...

About 2 years for Star Ocean 5. Picked it back up at about 20 some hrs in thinking I still had a ways to go, but I was actually only a few hrs from the end. That game was garbage.

Took like a ten year break on FFX.
Went back to it, and found out I was basically at the final boss.

When I got to Mexico in RDR, something or other put me off the game and I didnt go back to it for a few years. Im glad I did though; it was a great game.

Not sure if this counts as a story-based game, but Super Mario Land took me even longer. I first played it as a second grader but it was too hard for me at the time, and it wasnt until late high school that I finally went back and beat it.

Nier on PS3. Got ending A in 2015. Got the plat in 2024.

I am still playing Breath of the Wild and it's been like 4 years. I go months without playing.

To beat it? Elden Ring, got to Faram Azula and got bored, beat it a year later.

FFX I beat then came back a decade later to finally beat all the end game stuff.

Years, tbh. Most recent example was Pokmon Violet. I played at launch, but it was such a mess that I waited several years until it wasn't as bad. Playing on Switch 2 is so much better, though.

Almost a year in DQ11. Which is funny because it ended up being one of my top 10 games of that gen.

Definitely years, but it's hard to say for how long or what games.

No more than, like, a week or so. If I put a game down for a long time, it's probably because I don't plan to pick it up again, and if I *do* go back to it, I *will* just start over. I'll occasionally miss a few days if, like, we take a trip to visit family and I'm not able to play whatever I'm in the middle of, but that's about it.
