The damage Bungie and the live service push from now former corporate management has done to Sony this console generation will have books written about it.

I guess you might say it's a Marathon, not a sprint.

Everyone, from the beginning, said games as a service was not a sustainable business model and to stop making them.

And yet companies doubled, triple, and quadrupled down on them into some of the most catastrophic scenarios possible.

I just don't understand how we got here.

Out of curiosity, how do classic MMOs like WoW and FF XIV fit into this? They are, after all, the successors to the OG games as a service.

Seeing now that a majority of Bungie employees found out the game was delayed from the news report.

This thing is not coming out.

Bungie will never release another game (at least not until they've been fully bought out).

The big hits make a ton of money. If Sony gets one, it can make up for the multiple misses to get there.

MMORPG's feel significantly different than a character-based shooter (like Suicide Squad) or a competitive multiplayer game, in that there's probably a lot of content that you can access by paying the monthly fee and nothing else.

The "games as service" model is usually applied to games that are free to play and then try to constantly upcharge the player.

Imagine being an exec and saying "nah, we won't even attempt that"

Of course pretty much all the attempts were asinine, but it very much needed to be attempted

Sony said separately that it's coming out by the end of Q1 2026.

Helldivers 2 is the best-selling game Sony ever published (at least in North America). And it makes a lot from MTX too.

Yeah its clearly an indefinite delay where they do not have a set launch date yet but it will still release in the foreseeable future.

Is it? The last figures I can find for Helldivers 2 worldwide are 15 million against roughly 30 million for The Last of Us.

Maybe it was just fastest-selling? I dunno, I saw it from Mat Piscatella sometime last year.
