Or respond about something you specifically told them you weren't looking for. Not in the "there's no way around it, sorry" sort of way. That is unfortunate, but it is what it is. I'm talking the "Hey, I need this kind of spindlydindly for my widgetwongler for this specific reason, and I don't want a wankerdoodle" and someone responds with, "But the wankerdoodle is the best, it's my favorite. I suggest you get the wankerdoodle." It's like...no, I don't want that, and it doesn't work for what I'm trying to do, man!

I....what? 'You' as in the person ignoring the parameters or 'you' the one looking for a suggestion within said parameters?

The person chiming in that is ignoring your parameters to suggest the thing that was already explained is not what is being looked for could just...not respond. They don't have anything new to offer. They were already told that's not what they are looking for. Everyone isn't required to be more knowledgeable, but also everyone doesn't need to respond.

It's funny because I find that I'm looking for something that some other person is also in need of(or should I say needed). I Google it, I find an old message board where they are asking about it, the response is some person suggesting the thing that was already explained as not being what they are looking for. But the thing that kills me is when the OP follows up with, "never mind, I found the actual thing I needed" with no explanation. And I'm like "Nooooo!!! "

One awesome thing I have been seeing more recently though is some redditor bumping a long dead thread with the actual answer I'm looking for, and they are like, "for people googling this 5 years from now and finding people suggesting the thing that doesn't work for your needs" and I'm not like "Yessss!!!!" The real heroes out here!

...No? In fact, not knowledgeable, and asking for help. The rest of which is explained. Are you...fucking with me or something?

I hate that too, TC. I don't wanna be like "oh, there's something wrong with those people", but idk what that behavior arises out of. Sometimes i think it's as simple as people wanting to say something, despite not having something to say. Sometimes I think it's an ego thing and the ppl in question tie some part of themselves to whatever they're answering with

idk. it's annoying

Basically any time you ask a question or make a statement on CE you have to get pedantic to an unreasonable degree about specifying what you're not looking for and not saying. It's not exclusively a CE thing, because popular YouTube videos are plagued with it too. But this is where I see it because this is where I hang out.

"My favorite color is red. Not that the other colors are bad. Not that I'm a communist. Not that I get angry a lot. I just like the color red."

I ask again, because I know I suck at reading context sometimes. Who is the 'they' in this scenario?

Okay, that's...just...

Maybe being too generic with my initial is leading to some confusion here? I'll be more specific then.

Questioner: "I'm looking for an electric vehicle, around. 200 mile range or so. Where I'm moving to has excellent coverage of Superchargers, the house I'm moving into has a charging station built in, and solar/battery backup as well. I'm selling my gas-powered vehicle. I'm looking for an automatic electric sedan. I don't want a ICE vehicle moving forward. So please, no gas powered cars."

Responder: "ICE cars are just better. And manual is more fun. I like the car you have, so keep that one, even though it isn't a manual, but if you are hellbent on selling it, here's the manual gas car you should get!"

It's like...no, that's not what is being asked for.

Yeah, that might be it for some I guess. I've certainly posted "I'm not interested in 'thing' no thank you" before and it's like, "Then why even go into the topic? You know this isn't for you!"

I honestly feel like I'm being trolled, but I don't think I've ever seen her troll. I know I'm not a great communicator though, and I can be very verbose and still not properly get my point across. "You use a lot of words to say so little."

yes it may not apply in this case but sometimes the thing you're excluding would be better and that's why someone mentions it.

right but, time and place, yeah? tc is just venting about a nearly universal feeling. i know its not ur intent, and what youre saying *does* happen too. its just, thats not the thread tho. it can be a lil confusing (or even be interpreted as dismissive, which idt you are being ftr)

what youre saying does happen its just not what tc is trying to vent about

To be fair, the opposite also happens quite a bit. Where the "responder" believes they are more knowledgeable than the "questioner," so they ignore the parameters and give the answer that they think is best, even when it's not. Which is what it seems TC is venting about.

Yeah, so this is really coming down to my lack of explanation skills.

Perhaps for you to understand me, using your scenario, the asker already mentioned that they are deathly allergic to clover and alfalfa. They can't get near the stuff. And the poster still goes on about how that should be what they get.

I feel like we're talking about two different things, and I'm not being clear enough. Like when I mentioned in the opening post about not having a problem with "there's no way around it, sorry" kind of stuff, I know it isn't clear, but that really was meant to cover all that incidental stuff.

Like, I get what you're saying, but that's not at all what I'm talking about right now, ya?
