As policy makers in the UK weigh how to regulate the AI industry, Nick Clegg, former UK deputy prime minister and former Meta executive, claimed a push for artist consent would basically kill the AI industry.

Speaking at an event promoting his new book, Clegg said the creative community should have the right to opt out of having their work used to train AI models. But he claimed it wasnt feasible to ask for consent before ingesting their work first.

I think the creative community wants to go a step further, Clegg said according to The Times. Quite a lot of voices say, You can only train on my content, [if you] first ask. And I have to say that strikes me as somewhat implausible because these systems train on vast amounts of data.

I just dont know how you go around, asking everyone first. I just dont see how that would work, Clegg said. And by the way if you did it in Britain and no one else did it, you would basically kill the AI industry in this country overnight.

The comments follow a back-and-forth in Parliament over new legislation that aims to give creative industries more insight into how their work is used by AI companies. An amendment to the Data (Use and Access) Bill would require technology companies to disclose what copyrighted works were used to train AI models. Paul McCartney, Dua Lipa, Elton John, and Andrew Lloyd Webber are among the hundreds of musicians, writers, designers, and journalists who signed an open letter in support of the amendment earlier in May.

The amendment introduced by Beeban Kidron, who is also a film producer and director has bounced around gaining support. But on Thursday members of parliament rejected the proposal, with technology secretary Peter Kyle saying the Britains economy needs both [AI and creative] sectors to succeed and to prosper. Kidron and others have said a transparency requirement would allow copyright law to be enforced, and that AI companies would be less likely to steal work in the first place if they are required to disclose what content they used to train models.

In an op-ed in the Guardian Kidron promised that the fight isnt over yet, as the Data (Use and Access) Bill returns to the House of Lords in early June.

For some reason the idea that some companies/industries should just be allowed to fail is considered crazy talk. The "free market" is only supposed to let common people suffer, not get in the way of chasing infinite growth at the top.

Oh no, guess I cant use these services anymore to ask who discovered America and get some word slop about how it depends on your perspective and for whom. The answer is simple. How could Columbus have discovered it when people were already here? Not even mentioning Viking contact prior to Columbus. AI is like a contrarian troll on GameFAQs - perpetually engaging in well ackshually-ism and justifying it with word vomit.

Let it die.

Given that this is the sort of crap he spouts in his current job, it won't surprise non-Brits to know that nearly everyone in Britain either regards Clegg as a joke or outright hates him. Even most Liberal Democrats (the party he used to lead) hate him, after he took them into a coalition with the Conservatives in 2010 that most of them didn't approve of and then led the party to near-annihilation at the next election.

Agree, if they can't survive without scrapping new art from artists then what's the point? Thought the whole point of A.I was the ability to make something completely new and no one needs to do art. Now you're telling us artists still need to work for free, so that the A.I industry can continue to scrap works without asking, so A.Is can take the job of artists?

Capitalists are not going to give up on this battle because they're desperately looking for the next growth area that will continue to make the line go up exponentially and they've all collectively decided that AI MUST be it, after crypto, NFTs, and the Metaverse/AR/VR failed. They've staked everything on the line continuing to go up, so even other parts of Capitalism like our current copyright and IP laws MUST fall if they conflict with AI zuccing up everything.

The argument seems less "the artists would say no lol" and more "it's logistically not even feasible for the AI to just ignore all art it encounters until given express consent."

Overall if something is available for public consumption then it seems odd to all of a sudden want that public access revoked specifically for AI. As if it's fine for me to look at and download something but the wrong for the AI to look at it and try to imitate the style of the art.

I do hope there's some solution given the uproar but the tech doesn't seem to work in a way that gives much room.

I am fine with this, Generative AI companies should not just be able to scrape every bit of art they want to train their AI without having to seek permission.. The only reason companies push so hard against having to do this is because they no it makes things harder for them and they dont like it, And sadly they have an army of AI dude bro's and gooners supporting them because they are infatuated with AI

No. The argument is that if they took the time to properly compensate artists for their work, or at least ask permission before stealing it, that it would take longer to train their AI models (and their competitors who are not following the law will beat them to the finish line)
