All great info, thank you. I def experienced the fighting over black in my last limited on arena, I had to pivot after pack 1.

As a newer player I'm sticking to quick draft but I'm curious how much you need to monitor packs in real drafts. Do you try to make a note of the first pack to see what's missing when it gets back around to you?

I did one real draft with my token and it was pretty daunting with the time limit to monitor what everyone else was doing.

Seems like you can do about 1.5 quick drafts a week based on the gold you get daily (and more of course if you're actually good at getting gems).

Checking what doesn't get back to you is certainly an indicator but also seeing what does make it back to you. If you're seeing a lot of white cards passed to you from a certain direction, it could mean that people there are fighting over other colours. If you're three picks into a second pack and you see a bomb passed to you, it also indicates that that colour may not be popular on that side of the table.

I'm available again if we can get enough people. My decks aren't as good as what everyone else had last time, but it's fun. I bought some of the +1/+1 counter dice I saw you guys using too, that'll help a lot with my merfolk deck if I use it.

Mog is decently strong ya but I def have a couple more weaker decks that I can rock for sure!

It depends how the decks are built, honestly. Obviously some commanders are more prone to making things wacky.

A general rule of thumb is if your deck prevents your opponents from doing their thing, or even just playing the game, that's when you are going to be in for a bad time.

If you are playing stax and all of your cards make it so your opponents can't attack, and one person's deck is all about playing creatures and attacking, do you think they are having fun?

At that point, if the player doesn't have enough removal for the stax pieces, they might as well just scoop and find another table to play at. Why would you want to sit at a table doing literally nothing for an hour+?

If your commander and deck is just about making things wacky and weird, that can be totally fine and often encouraged, but there is a fine line between causing chaos and making the game unplayable for some players.

I've been in several games where a Blood Moon was played and it made it literally impossible for me to take any actions.

So I just sat there, for 30+ minutes, passing my turn. I sure am glad I drove 20 minutes down to my LGS to sit at a table and do nothing!

Had a 7-2 quick draft last night with R/W equips, but I'm only silver so I probably wasn't playing against the best comp. I had 3 coral swords and firion, along with dion and paladin's arms. So just a generic aggro with some stickiness to it and some good removal (2x thunder magic and light of judgment). Item shopkeep is a really good card for the archetype in limited imo, it really helped me push damage through.

Any spell can be cast for 1 of each element? Or does that only replace the number part of the mana cost?

You can cast any spell for one of each element. It completely replaces the spell's mana cost.

My problem with Sunday is I promised to play online with my nephew that day, so I'd need to be done with MTG by like 7 EST (4 PST) so we'd need to start with enough time before that to get in a game or two. If that doesn't work, you guys can of course plan without me lol. My work schedule keeps me busy weekday evenings so I'll miss a lot of these if they stop being on the weekend.

Also I'm working on a pauper EDH deck, not sure if that's a format people would be interested in but I'm making a crappy Broodspinner deck just for fun.

Having not looked at this set too much, why is an Ochu a 1-drop 1/1?

Those things are massive, and the ones in FF13 especially are basically all boss encounters. I see it's got that expensive pump ability, but still.

I assume it grows, like a plant.

Did a draft today and got a showcase Emet-Selch, it's pretty nice. Also picked up one of the Cloud binders, just need a Sephiroth one now too.

It'd take me a little while to learn about the format and build a deck, but I'm down. At a glance, it basically looks like a slightly depowered EDH minus board wipes (?). Maybe a bit closer to 2012 EDH, which imo was originally meant to be the "smush together random draft chaff and play" format

I can plan for the following weekend too, but I'm still available Saturday and early Sunday this coming weekend.

I think it's just that the commander is an uncommon creature (doesn't need to be legendary) and every other hard has to be common rarity. There are a few additional banned cards like Rhystic Study, and players have 30 life instead of 40, but otherwise normal Commander rules. It's just meant to be a cheaper format where you can't have a deck full of super-good rare and legendary cards. My Broodspinner deck cost like 25 bucks and I bought over a hundred common cards just to play around with.

My card shop is doing the Pride Commander event tomorrow where every legendary creature has partner. I ripped apart an old precon I had and turned it into a Vanille and Fang deck. If I can meld into Ragnarok even one time I'll be happy.

Just got my gift bundle delivered and I got pretty much nothing in my packs, including the collector's lol. Fuck me I guess, at least it comes with the neat little box holder with cool art

I pulled off the Ragnarok meld twice in three games, was pretty sick.

Just had a lot of really fun Pride Commander games at my LGS.

Had to bring out my actual Partners Yoshimaru-Kediss for a game too which they won of course because good boy and good lizard.

And has a super sick Triskaidekaphile win on the last game playing the 20 ways to win deck.

I really wish this game had a free draft or something. Of course that's less money for them so they wouldn't do it.

But I'm trying to quick draft Outlaw Junction and it's basically impossible unless I sit and study every card in the set.

But I can basically only afford 1 or 2 quick drafts a week with the amount of gold/gems you get so it's not like I can really get better by just drafting and playing.

My last draft I didn't even get to play because I got land screwed in 2/3 games. Both games I'm pretty sure I had 10-11 lands on board by the time the game was over and it wasn't even close.

Should I just give up on quick draft and save up to play premier draft instead? I'm trying to focus on quick draft because I get more time to pick cards and it's cheaper but is the power level just higher here overall because of AI picks?

I personally found quick draft easier, also easier to stomach if you failed since it's only half price. It also being AI draft with no timer means you actually can take your time and observe all the options at your leisure, so I would think quick draft would be better for learning than a premier.

How many lands are you putting in a limited deck? You want no more than 17, and I personally have always been a 16 lands guy unless the avg cost is like over 3 ish.

Yeah always 17 lands. I did make it to platinum last month just doing final fantasy mostly. I have a decent grasp on that set but I just can't enough experience playing other sets.

Draft can be pretty brutal that way. It's easier to draft sets closer to their release. It's possible many people you're playing against have been drafting OTJ for over a year, so it's not a fair competition.

Ahh, "should" is a tough word. Depends on your goals. Maximize f2p income? Play as many fun games as possible? Practice?

Ultimately, do whatever you enjoy. Quick draft is gonna get you more games and more casual opponents. In my humble opinion, drafting in general doesn't pay commensurate to the effort/stress unless you're winning reliably, simply love drafting, or are focused on turning your gold into gems

I soured on in-person drafting pretty early on (pre-release sealed all the way!), when I realized all I was doing was paying for the grinders' drafts until i became one of the grinders. Digital draft isn't super different in that respect, but it stings less because you're spending time rather than money and the payouts can be better on average
