I want 100% of the vehicles on the road to be self driving. Real drivers are too dangerous, and Im not always exempt from this. It would also be easier to do ride-share programs, too.

But one time a self-driving car got into an accident! Ban it! A human would never crash in a million years!

Im not concerned with the dangers of human error. Im much more intrigued with the efficiency of automated driving. Once it gets done properly,
traffic should in theory be a thing of the past,
as there should be no reason for cars to stop until they get to their destination.

I kinda agree, but it needs to be an all or nothing approach. If a human element is still in play, there's every potential for fuck ups.

Self-driving cars are incapable of variable decision-making. Self-driving cars can't account for the unpredictable nature of humans nor animals nor nature itself.

So many people in the comments of this video are victim blaming.

I would love this from a lazy standpoint to not have to drive myself but where I live I 100% would not trust AI on snow covered roads in blizzards with drifts and icy conditions. Fuck that. I'm taking the wheel.

Just one of those things we should've started forty years ago (a heavier focus on public transport), at least in the states.

Have ai driven trucks over the interstate roads. Few traffic changes, consistent speeds, minimized downtime, known matinence locations. Once they reach the cities/towns have them trade off to human drivers.

This has a load of positives.
  • Keeps drvers local
  • Minimizes most deadly outcomes with human drivers(weather, fatigue, distraction, improper speeds, attitude)
  • Takes advantage ai and human strengths
  • Reduces absentee family members

Would an AI driven truck know what to do if a road is flooded? Or for an accident ahead? Or for a bunch of ducks crossing the street?

When another country finally goes fully automated on the cars front, itll be at least another thirty years before it happens here. Hell, we still mostly have bikes on the roads.

Rather than self-driving cars, I'd just love cities to be built around trains, trollies, busses, and bikes. You don't need self driving cars if you just eliminate 80% of traffic.

IMO the biggest pro would be having your car drive you home if you've gotten a little drinky.

But honestly, booze or not, if your automated car for whatever crashes into someone else, and you have no control over it, would you be at fault? Debate time.

Would be disastrous and humans are never going to give up driving.

Its not just something done out of necessity any more. People enjoy cars and enjoy going for a ride.

Yes, because Elon's software disables automatic driving if it detects an imminent collision. That way the program cannot be blamed and you are technically in control.

An AI driven truck would likely be connected to a network, meaning it gets access to up-to-date traffic reports. It would be able to process that info instantaneously and adjust miles ahead of a human.

AI doesn't
  • fall asleep at the wheel
  • road rage
  • get distracted
  • speed, especially during hazardous situations(Fog,Snow, Flood)
  • miss important traffic updates
  • need rest stops beyond maintenance
Why have the humans do the inner city/local dispersion?
Humans are great at adaptation, and they can use more than just logic to determine danger/outcome. This is important when having to deal with the randomness of pedestrians. Where they fail is at maintaining performance continuously over long stretches. AI on the other hand great for iteration. I believe AI or Driverless cars can work if we simplify what we ask of it. This exact same belief can be applied to humans.
