With all the benefits and negatives that come with. So if you are a Lich you have a phylactery you need to keep safe and rejuvenated to stay alive and sane and you have a lot of magical power but your body is all boney with no flesh.

Vampires you are vulnerable to sunlight, running water, garlic, stakes, can only enter places you are invited into and you need a coffin with dirt from your home to rest in during the day. But you have super strength, enhanced reflexes, immortality, can shapeshift into various animals as well as a mist and can enthrall people with a glance.

Now which do you pick?

How vulnerable/powerful are we talking?

I find it interesting that in amongst your drawbacks you dont list the need to kill.

Lich by a mile. vampire is mostly downsides.

The whole vampire thing is just a metaphor for rampant sexuality and hedonism in general.

Sounds better than spending eternity as some kind of weird skeleton.

I want to say Vampire, but I'd be concerned with how I'd... sustain myself. Am I going to have to be piling up corpses?

Though I have no idea how a Lich does what a Lich does either.

You drink blood. You don't have to kill the person and they don't turn just from being bitten.

Lich's maintain their phylacteries via stealing the souls of others.

The way the TC wrote it, it sounds like Lich is better. There are different levels of vampire ish where ya light hurts and you need to feast in someway so to speak.

I think I just don't know enough about Lich lifestyle.

I feel like in the fantasy media I consume where liches and vampires cohabitate (Elder Scrolls immediately springs to mind), necromancers go into great detail describing the insane lengths and seemingly-insurmountable obstacles needed to attain lichdom, and I'm always like 'dude, just hop on over to the nearest vampire cave and get one of them to bite you if you want power / immortality that badly.' It's not like any of the downsides of being a vampire are that much worse than being a rotting skeleton for all eternity.

I figured if you were that powerful you would just create your own reality. That's why I considered Lich first.

That is because being a lich is just overtly better. Being a lich requires that you basically be at the pinnacle of magic, which means that your floor is close to the ceiling of being a vampire.

Lol, do it yourself. Being a lich means you can cast polymorph pretty easily.

They do often do that to an extent. Usually a pocket dimension built into their own domains.

Lich. Magic fixes most of the shortcomings, being kind and having a little foresight solves the phylactery issue

Lich. I wouldn't mind being a twink again

Lich is the obvious choice, you have a variety of spells to deal with your downsides.

Being a Lich sounds like a lot of work. I'd rather be a middle level Vampire as long as my Sire wasn't ya know a crappy one.

Lich. There's a version that can change back into a human form and does not require souls to sustain itself.

Considering how judgmental society is me thinks having to spend the rest of your un-life as a bony skeleton who has to feed on the souls of the living to stay sane every couple years is probably something thats pretty hard to un-live with.

No, they didn't make it clear just how much better than a vampire a lich is. A vampire is a CR 13 monster in 5th, a lich is a CR 22. The level cap is 20, level 21+ is for you making your way into being a deity.

There is quite literally no version of a vampire in all of media that the comparison isn't so biased towards lichdom that it isn't comedic that the two are being compared.

That is a demilich.

I just think on the road to lichdom which sounds very difficult, I am way overthinking this. It's dammit, so many will just become corrupted and I just wanted to go back in time.

Fun fact often glossed over in Dracula adaptions:

In the novel, Dracula studied black magic and willingly turned himself into a vampire through a ritual so that he would be immortal. He was always a murderous scumbag.

IIRC Forgotten Realms, though the "good" lich has lichdom placed upon them. Either a deity turns them into a lich to complete a task, they become one through willpower to complete some unfinished business, or they have been cursed by a necromancer.

Not really any good Lich but as I recall there are a handful of neutral ones. There's also ways to be a Lich that don't require evil acts.

It really is the obvious choice over vampire.

Vampire with a blood harem.

lich is also the ultimate gamer choice

sure you might be bones and so won't get any bitches without massive charisma (you can't have sex anyways)

you can't enjoy food anymore cause you got no tongue or even lips

but

now you don't need to sleep or poop or eat

you can straight up grind non-stop

you can become the literal GOD gamer of them all

As a Lich you can just cast true polymorph each day on yourself and be anything you want, bony body problem solved. Sure a vampire could get there but not too often do you see Wizard Vamps. Except for Strahd I guess.
