To add more context: I'm referring to the martial law rumors people were yapping about.

Wouldn't be surprised if Trump got talked down or he doesn't have the military support yet to really kickstart his Reich.

Let it serve as a reminder that the right wing doesn't have exclusivity on falling for made up bullshit they see online. Since he won the second time I've been seeing more of this stuff. People didn't just post about it here, I saw it on Reddit and Facebook too.

The administration couldn't justify invoking the act with the historically low number of immigrants coming in through the southern border. It may very well be they chose not to BECAUSE they saw the backlash of millions of people protesting ahead of the decision and knew they couldn't get away with it.

Just because they didn't go through with it doesn't mean they didn't plan to, but the point of resistance IS to force them to change their plans, so it's working as intended.

There is part of me that questions - what if the cat never got that far out of the bag, what if Democrats had gone through with a shutdown, and what if his approval ratings were just a bit higher? Word has it that figures like Hegseth were talking him out of it, meaning the scales could have easily tipped the other way. However, I don't believe any official sources have confirmed them having such a conversation.

At this point, I'm led to believe that just because something bad happens, doesn't mean there isn't or wasn't a potential for worse events to unfold or have unfolded. Also, just because something bad doesn't happen, that doesn't disprove those presenting issue for concern, especially when said people were wanting to do everything in their power to prevent the bad thing from happening.

It should be a genuine surprise to everyone that it *didn't*. Trump has made no secret about wanting to, there's been an egregious lack of people telling him "no", and the fact it was his idol's birthday would've made it the most fitting day for him to fully embrace said idol's cause.

Things were lined up so perfectly for him that the people insisting it wouldn't happen sounded downright delusional. But, heck, it *didn't* happen, so I guess we're in a delusion. Might as well dream big. I'm gonna wake up tomorrow as an anime girl with magical powers because I now exist on a timeline where all I have to do is say it for it to be true.

This part is the only part that gave me pause, because the rest of it looked the standard conservative "spend more on police!" stuff. I agree completely that this could be bleak taken at face value, but I do also think that there is at least some reason to hope that nothing much will come of this part either.

Like everything from the past five months, some things are gonna be worse than expected and some things are gonna be better. Some people really buy into the doomerism, but it's better than the people who have their heads in the sand and ignore all the terrible stuff

I don't know if it's honestly better. Many of the doomers (especially on this board) would rather do nothing than actually help. Plus... they just attack anyone that disagrees with them.

I wasn't being smug. Also...people need to be called out for posting nonsense rumors. Many of these rumors can make things worse.

CE and politics is like putting a fork in the toaster.. while its on.

It wasnt a rumor. It was speculation based on reasonable analysis of the factors at play. The dangers of the current administration are real and constant and it is smart to watch what is going on and prepare for what it could lead to. Nobody was saying Trump will declare Martial Law on Easter because hes evil and thats what evil people do. They said Easter was a potential deadline based on an executive order where he could potentially do these things as laid out in Project 2025. This was and is a perfectly reasonable potential scenario to be aware of and prepare for and if your response was stop dooming its just a random made up rumor you deserved any scorn that was directed at you for downplaying reasonable speculation as a random rumor.

In his previous term, Trump already tried to nuke a hurricane, and he tried to declare martial law when he lost the 2020 election. This time there are no adults in the room to stop him
