I'd be pretty hypocritical to judge someone for blowing up their spot with an addiction.

Not saying "you get a free pass to fuck up if you're an addict," just that I understand what it's like to lose control over something that you know is killing you.

I played the slots once, just because I'd never been to a casino before and I was just doing it for fun. I won $12 and quit right then and there. They say the house always wins, but that's just because most folks don't know when to quit.

I do see people as idiots if they keep on losing money over and over and keep at it, anyway. The addicts obviously need help, but I'm talking about people still in control of themselves but who choose to make foolish decisions.

The house doesn't necessarily defeat every person, but that's not really the goal. Every time someone plays, they statistically win. Whether they paid out that $12 to you or some addict who put it back in the machine, it was going to happen once every so many plays.

Would only judge if they were hurting their family as well. Messing yourself up is one thing, but don't throw away your responsibility to look out for your family like that.

No. Gambling addiction is very real, and gambling businesses are evil and ruthless manipulators. Banning gambling altogether probably wouldn't work, but at the very least all gambling advertising and sponsorship should be banned.

I can honestly 100% say I dont give a shit how other people spend their money. Never have. Whatever hobby they are into, whatever their vice is its a two way street in that I dont care what they buy, drive, live in, dress like, or anything and I also 100% dont give a fuck what they think about me.

I learned as a young kid to not compare my life to others whether good or bad and Ive been really happy with that approach my entire life.

Not to derail the subject in a different direction but I think its weird there are people my age that compare their lives to others on social media. You can say those Instagram lives are fake anyway and thats an entirely different discussion but the fact you are even comparing your life against everyone else is weird to me anyway. Again Im glad I learned that lesson like 40 years ago. Kinda sad many people havent learned to let go of that measuring stick and let it impact their own self worth.

I've worked at a casino for over 20 years. When you are around gambling on a daily basis you can't help sizing up the faces you see regularly. A lot of them are fun friendly people who will come play a couple days a week. Then there are the hardcore addicts, the ones who have to come in every day, driving in a whiteout blizzard because they need the penny slots. Those who know our drawing schedules better than their grandkids' birthdays. I do feel a bit sad for them that this is what they chose for their lives but I'm in no position to say or fo anything about it.

I guess it would depend how much they gamble?

someone buying scratchers or a powerball ticket every once in a while, whatever

but I definitely judge the people who buy like 10-20 scratch tickets at a time, and sit in their car to scratch them and just to go in and buy more. They're never gonna hit the jackpot

Not all, but I doubt there's very many who I wouldn't. It's totally possible to enjoy a spot of gambling without letting it control you, but on the other hand my wastrel, parasite of a grandmother gambled away all the money my grandpa left her and lost her house and then her appartment and now has to live with us, being a hateful, depressing waste of space all the while.

Let me tell you my personal perspective from people Ive known. It starts with borrowing a few dollars to five figures. One family member owed a bookie so much, his brother had to give up his restaurant to settle the debt.

Another guy I knew had family members harassed by collectors and they roughed him up where he stayed in a hospital for 2 weeks. He had no health insurance so his family had to foot the bill for him too.

While you want to sympathize with these folks because of your experience with addiction, the feelings of people that were victimized by gambling addicts should be valid as well.

No more than anyone else addicted to something. Obviously it would be better for them and society if they didn't do it, but they are. No point in getting mad at them or looking down on them. A lot of people struggle with addiction and clearly a lot of things are encouraging them to do it (assuming it's legal where they are). Gambling and alcohol are like the two most common addictive habits in most places and you are going to be using up a lot of energy if you spend time judging everyone who engages in them.

Bit of a misconception. If you're playing at a casino they take what's called the rake, say on average $2 out of every pot at the lowest stakes. So if you're winning a bunch of pots, you're still giving to the house which in turn cuts into profit. Also don't forget to tip your dealer, it's especially bad juju not to after a fat win.

Second, while you're not playing directly against the house, odds are there are multiple players at the table better than you. Sometimes that can be worse, playing against someone who has a beat on you.
