I've asked someone this recently, but is there something about Gengar that has blown up in popularity? I've been seeing a ton of people with Gengar clothes and paraphernalia.

I've never had any strong feeling towards it, but it's from first gen, so it's automatically better than most Pokemon.

He's a cool character

And it's funny how he is supposed to have a "scary" persona but makes a great plush toy

I understand they were going for an anti-clefable but I think Haunter has a better design.

Is this true? I've never thought about it like that, but I see it now.

One of my go to guys in Blue (the only one I ever played much of.) I always thought it was a real bummer all the Ghosts where also poison type contributing to psychic (arguably the least cool) being overpowered.

It was poor balance, but I had the opposite thought at the time, being relieved that I didn't have to worry about my Psychic Types struggling against the, what, three ghosts in the game? And they barely had any actual Ghost Type moves available.

Grass was another type in that generation that was nearly always paired with Poison. So the advantage it had against Ground was neutralized with its weakness.

Grass at least could lean on auto-crit Razor Leaf. And Victreebell had Wrap.

Lick was the only damaging ghost move in the game. It didn't affect Psychic at all, for some reason, and it wouldn't do much damage anyway, with its paltry base 30 power. And the only damaging bug moves were Twin-needle (exclusive to Beedrilol) and Pin Missilie (which was almost as limited).

Night shade and astonish
Night shade does fixed damage based upon level that is unaffected by typing.
Astonish didn't exist until Gen 3.
