Buying a car for your kid when he/she graduates is common if not traditional. June is the time of high school graduation ceremonies. Will tariffs stay paused until July, do you suppose?

I ask because I am thinking that family high school traditions are more sacred than the cult leader, #47.

No vehicle for me (definitely not common) but at my graduation open house me and my cousin were the only people in my entire class who had beer/liquor at our party. I had 2 kegs and various bottles of whiskey/rum/scotch/bourbon. I have a large family and a bunch of my aunts and uncles enjoy drinking so it was a must at my open house.

My open house and my cousin Tia's became the most popular open houses that virtually every adult migrated to and stayed at. We had tons of great food and liquor. My uncles who are farmers provided a whole hog and cow for all the food plus various side dishes by my grandma who was a professional cook. It's in the Midwest in the middle of cornfields and cow pastures. Drinking is a hobby for many people haha.

My open house was spectacular.

Two different scenarios. My high school parking lot was filled with student cars and out of my entire class there was 1 girl whose parents bought her a vehicle when she turned 16. The rest of the people were either just driving a family car but their parents owned it or they bought their own used cars and were making payments on them or bought cheaper shitboxes which was actually possible when I was in high school 35 years ago.

Getting a car gifted to you for graduation is not common. A kid driving the family car while in school certainly is.

Or they're junky used cars that the kids themselves had to buy from a summer job (which is how most of the kids in my school had them) or they're just borrowing their mom's car or something. I barely knew anyone who straight up got a car as a gift (even used).

and how many of those high school kids actually owned the car? probably none

when I was in high school, most kids who had a car(which was probably only about 10% of the entire senior year), had an old used car that their parents gave them. Only the really rich kids had new cars at that age.

Being able to drive a car to school as a senior is VASTLY different than being BOUGHT one.

I did get to drive a car to school as a Senior...it was the family Ford Ranch Wagon that was not needed during weekdays for my parents. It wasn't mine.

Where the fuck is it traditional? If your kid is going away to college & living on campus, there is absolutely no reason for a car.

Our daughter is most likely going to school in state (she will commute). So we are planning to buy her a car (not for graduation, most likely before she turns 17).

Traditional?

My parents did buy me a car, but it was at the time a 14 year old Toyota with over 200k miles. Tariffs probably won't have as much an impact on used cars, especially those not sold by auto lots.

Most MAGAts aren't currently affording newish cars for their kids.
