What's hard and does require specialized knowledge is knowing which controls do all of those things, triggering each step at the right time, and having enough of a sense of where the plane is around you. It's classic Dunning-Kruger: Because people know just a little bit about it (and a random layman is more likely than a random laywoman to know anything about flying a plane because that's just the trend seen in STEM-adjacent interests), they underestimate how much more there is that they don't know. That said, it is also worth noting that "I could land a plane better than an uncontrolled freefall could" is a pretty low bar to clear. I don't doubt that a significant chunk of that half of men actually think they could pull a Sully, because men, but I'd suggest that anyone with the most basic knowledge of "pull back on stick to go up" would be better than having no pilot at all (bonus points if they also know "don't just yank on the stick because that will rip your flaps off"). --- This is my signature.
