Inspired by seeing strong reviews for Beck's album Mutations, I have tried and tried and just haven't been able to get into it, and wondering which artists that everyone seems to love, except you.

Me: Beck, David Bowie, Billy Joel

Beck changes genres like every album. Obviously not every one is going to resonate with everyone. He's more of a critical darling bc people are impressed with his musicianship. And it's not like he's seeing huge commercial success beyond his big hit Loser in the 90s.

Yeah, I don't get it, either.

Madonna. She's good at predicting what's about to become popular and making an inferior version that gets radio play.

Wes Anderson. Everything he does is tiresome and irritating.

Unfun fact: I got a C for a semester in high school because I questioned why anyone would like Jackson Pollock or consider it art, not knowing that Pollock was my teacher's favorite artist.

That cost me Valedictorian, but I had the last laugh, because I live in a box under a bridge and she's still an art teacher.

Despite my love for avant-garde/abstract/pretentious styles in music (Bowie, Beefheart/Zappa, Mr. Bungle, etc.), I find the vast majority of abstractionism in visual arts boring, and frequently off-putting in its pretentiousness.

For example, I was looking at a Mondrian on a visit to the museum, and the description told how the piece had sat in his studio for something like three years, as he labored over something about it - then he had a "eureka" moment and changed the color of one small square and declared it complete. My eyes rolled so hard I nearly fell into the lily pond on the opposite wall.

For some reason that reminded me of how about a month ago my friends and I went to visit the art museum and one of the employees there was VERY happy and excited to show us that one of the pieces of Greek pottery they had on display was painted to show a bunch of drunk guys stumbling around vomiting on each other

He was just so genuinely happy to share that with museum guests lol

Lol. Yes, yes, it had an impact. I recognize that it is art, and can be evocative. I also know it has heavy influence on artists I do like. In that respect I "get it", but it's a turn off for me.

-Jackson Pollock is a good example. I also feel the same with some of this other kind of abstract art like 1 little squiggle on a white page or the banana thing.

-I'm going to sound like an old man, but a lot of music from a certain era onward. Most of any genre just doesn't click with me any more outside a few exceptions. I even question myself over it. For example, I like a lot of older pop music, even some of the most simple dumb downed banal crap, but why can't 99% of music click with me that's even better on a technical level than a lot of what I do like, regardless of genre? I don't hate it or judge it, but I don't "get" it.

decent but not a top tier rapper. not a good singer. allegedly stolen songs. definitely has a bunch of stuff written for him. won't really be remembered for having a top tier discography artisically, but rather he was there as background music for personal moments because he saturates the market.

most popular rapper ever.

I haven't been too into art for years, but I remember liking Jackson Pollock's works.

but I also liked Picasso and Basquiat, so my preference towards more abstract looking stuff was already there.

That would be pretty much a ton of artists newer than 2000 but it is low hanging fruit for an old guy to not like newer music. So with that said I stay stuck in the past and sure there are bands I don't connect with or care for but it is rare for me to flat out dislike someone to the point where I need to turn the channel any time I hear them. There is a band that fits that criteria for me.

Kiss.

I just am baffled they are so popular. Great marketers and salesman I will give them that. And for what it is worth I have nothing against them personally and for full disclosure I even watched that show Gene Simmons had in the past called Family Jewels that showed his home life and I think he is honestly a fairly normal and grounded person.

Sure he has a high opinion of himself and his band but overall he seemed like a pretty decent dad and somewhat normal person. But fuck me I just think their music sucks so much.

The other band that almost fits into that category too is U2. Just not a fan. They aren't to the level of Kiss though. There is actually a couple songs I can tolerate from U2.
