World launched with less than a third of the content of GU/XX and laughable difficulty, by comparison. The only reasons to even consider it before Iceborne would have been if you couldn't stand classic MH or didn't have a Switch/3DS to play GU on.

The only good monster hunters were in the 3DS

it's even worse than anyone could imagine

this is a single player game

if you join someone, you can only see them in the hub camp, if you leave, you lose them. so to fix that, you have to open the menu, go to settings, go to link group, then enable environmental link

but this is only for running out of camp and just exploring*

if you want to go on a specific hunt or side hunt thing, it will kick you from the entire link group, but ONLY if you're on environmental link, if you aren't, then you're still in it, and have the mission posted. people can join, go.

so

if you want to actually run through the story, of which this game is 90% of?

well you can't!

you can each individually go through it solo to watch the plethora of cutscenes, and then when you eventually make it to the boss monster, you can designate a host player, and if it isn't you, you get to leave the mission entirely, go back to the hub, and wait to receive an invitation to fight that monster with the designated host.

if you are the designated host, you get to run around trying to navigate the menu while avoiding aggressive bosses to find the invite link group option, which is buried under a fucking labyrinth of menus

repeat for everyone, because your progress probably wont save on your campaign mission if you quit out of it in a link group.

*unless you have a story mission that starts by leaving camp, and you will because majority of them are. then you can't just run around and explore.

Except for the part where co-op compatibility was entirely dictated by what story cutscenes people had seen before so it was impossible to just do a continuous, seamless co-op run with anyone because only people who had already beaten the level you were on could join you. So if, for example, you and your roommate both bought the game at launch and wanted to play together, you had to take turns beating each mission alone and then going back and playing it together but only one of you for the first time.

Absolute steaming dog shit game design. Games ten years older than that had already figured out how to do seamless co-op.

I'm having fun but the co-op seems really cumbersome

I am amused that their 'solution' to multiplayer was to add another layer (link parties) on top of lobbies. If they can't figure it out they should just go back to gathering and village quests.

Good game tho, got 35 hours in over the weekend.
