As President Donald Trump blasts through a Washington that is clearly struggling to keep pace with his disruptive moves on everything from names on maps to the fate of backwater parts of the bureaucracy to the new, confusing U.S. strategy on the future of Ukraine, keeping the establishment perpetually off balance may well be the prevailing vibe over the next four years.
What almosteveryone is missing: This country has roughly one month until the government runs out of money, and things like paychecks to troops, food-inspection programs, disaster-relief payments, and aid to low-income families could all be caught up in a chaotic game of chicken.

Republicans could keep the lights on all on their own, but probably wont. They control the House, the Senate and the presidency. Its their government, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries told reporters last week, setting up a blame-game preamble. Jeffries is factually correct. Even still, Republicans may end up needing a bailout from Democratic lawmakers before March 14. That gives Democrats their first real leverage in Trumps second term, but its entirely unclear if they will use it or to what end. While a unified plan has yet to emerge, wisps of fight-ready ambitions are starting to move from the fringes to the mainstream, albeit more slowly than most rank-and-file Democrats would like.

Remember last time Trump boasted about sghutting down the government and than next week screamed it was everyone else fault.

Republicans can't seem to agree on a budget amongst themselves. Democrats shouldn't help to pass one without heavy concessions from Congressional Republicans and from Trump.

Yep, until they get concessions, not one democrat should be agreeing to anything about this budget. Republicans control Congress, it's on them to agree on, and pass the budget.

Sad, but true. People seem to have such short memories outside the dumbest things or the most juicy, blatant lies.

Perhaps the best long-term play is not to help the least worst bill pass, but let the GOPpers own the shutdown and see how long it lasts before they manage to get a stopgap through themselves. If it lasts until 2026, 2028, or for as long as they hold power (legitimately nor not), that might just be the way it must be. There may not be another way for people to learn than through pain.

I'm willing to listen to other ideas, of course.

Ideally I don't want Democrats to come save the day again but I know the fact that they can't let those government workers go without pay will be the thing that makes them come riding in again before immediately getting hammered by progressives, liberals, the media, and conservatives for being cowards, weak and other bad names, their empathy for people is a weakness where as Republican's sociopathy is their strength

Im somewhat curious how much of our governments infrastructure and jobs is automated and for how long it can last without human assistance. And how long until the average citizens starts to notice.

I hope the dems completely stonewall the repubs, but I expect them to almost immediately fold.

How is Trump supposed to annex Canada if theres no functional government?

I've heard talk of Democrats letting it happen, because they see shutting down the government as a way of slowing the damage that Trump is doing.
So instead of bailing them out, Dems might actually be the ones going for a shutdown this time.
