I kinda hate this trope tbh. Being obvious undermines it, but being too unexpected just feels cheap.

Alignment changes can work, but they're better when it's not a surprise and not supposed to be. Like when you see the character in question witness or experience something and see them slowly changing, or even just spending more time quietly thinking to themselves.

As mentioned, Baten Kaitos is a good one, and the first that comes to mind.

But I think maybe a bigger one, and this is a massive plot twist for the 3DS RPG, but Bravely Default.

The Wii RPG The Last Story also comes to mind, I don't remember that game as well but it was a major plot twist. And also certain characters in the more popular Persona and Tales series.

...I'm sure there are others that I'm just not thinking of.

The Bard's Tale (the 3D ARPG not the regular game).

The game didn't really take itself seriously though so it worked out well.

Also in Guardian Tales, season 2 was full of a bunch of these and I found each one shocking despite being telegraphed.

I feel like Zelos betraying the team in Tales of Symphonia was not something I saw coming since Kratos already betrayed you, and in the path where he died it felt real final.

There was also Spider in Megaman X Command Mission I guess.

Doesn't count as "evil" but considering the story significance it's close enough, probably the keepers in Mass Effect.

I just wrote them off as an annoying, early-game"find the Easter eggs" mission. I was surprised when it turned out that not only were they important, they were the crux of the villains' plan

It's a by-the-numbers puzzle platformer where you have to rescue a princess, and it turns out the princess has been running away from the protag the entire time.

Warhammer 40k: Rogue Trader has some good ones, IMO.

like, it's set in a really dark universe, so even "good" characters can come off as pretty harsh, but you don't doubt their loyalty to the God-Emperor, so it can be surprising when their betrayal comes/twist happens.

on a similar note, David from The Last of Us - you could tell that they could be a threat, but so was everyone else you came along who turned out to be friendly, so when you find out they weren't like the others, I thought it was well done.

Persona 4's reveal was good. You can piece it together earlier on but it can also be a big "Oh riiiiiight!" at the intended moment if you've been playing in more of a "just get to the next cutscene" sort of way like I did many years ago.

The biggest problem with Persona 4's mystery is that it puts zero effort into its red herrings, to the point that most people will probably guess the killer because it literally can't be anyone else.

That said I also just went with the flow and didn't think about it too hard, so when the reveal came it was sort of a mix of "Oh neat" and "well it had to be them" lol

My biggest problems with the biggest persona 4 spoiler is that persona 4 arena's many advertisements spoiled the hell out of me about it. I never played persona 4 at the point arena came out, and so when that game with it's DLC character advertisements was plastered everywhere I knew it was a twist for a long time, =(
