They're not the Three Swordsmen.

I should probably just read the book.

The long guns of the time were notoriously unreliable, clumsy, inaccurate, and took quite a bit of time to reload, so the Three Musketeers' muskets really only saw use on the battlefield in wartime (and the Musketeers are only shown there for a short time in the book). In the close-quarters combat that was much more frequently depicted in Dumas' book (and its legion of adaptations), swords and pistols were significantly more practical than muskets.

Theyre called that because theyre members of the unit called Musketeers of the military household of the King of France

They dont run around with muskets because of the reasons given in the last post.

Having said that they do use firearms occasionally, and frankly there isnt that much sword fighting in the books.

I honestly never even made the connection that Musketeer means uses a musket.

What others have said about long guns of the time period being notoriously unreliable, in addition to the simple fact that The Three Musketeers sounds more badass than The Three Swordsmen.

In the close-quarters combat that was much more frequently depicted in Dumas' book (and its legion of adaptations), swords and pistols were significantly more practical than muskets.

Muskets weren't inaccurate, or at least not to the extend people think of. In good conditions they were fairly accurate but battlefield conditions don't allow people to properly aim and fire their weapons as there's smoke and death all around you. Generally early musket military writers wrote that muskets were best used during skirmishes and more informal warfare. Even with early handgonnes there's tales of people using guns to snipe people like a French gunner in the service of Joan of Arc that was able to snipe individual knights with his handgonne.

But as you say in the condition the Musketeers found themselves in swords and pistols are more practical than carrying a heavy musket all day.
