https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/there-is-hope-that-gta-6-will-cost-as-much-as-100-says-analyst/

Matthew Ball of Epyllion has released his State of Video Gaming in 2025 report, which muses on how the video game industry could change in the forthcoming year.

One large focus of the report is Grand Theft Auto 6, which will doubtlessly be the biggest video game release of the year, should it make its planned 2025 release date.

According to the report, there is hope within the video game industry that publisher Take-Two will use the unprecedented excitement around GTA 6 in order to bump up the default price of the game to $100.

Its believed that if Take-Two took this step with GTA 6, a game that will sell incredibly well regardless of the price, then others could follow suit, and potentially aid in recovering spiraling development costs.

GTA publisher Take-Two was one of the first to raise the price of games from $60 to $70 in 2020, using the transition to the next generation of consoles as an excuse. While it is likely that GTA 6 will be released with a $100 version as part of a line-up of various special editions, its currently expected that the standard case game will be $70.

Gaming budgets have exploded in recent years, as expectations have grown for how much content is included in a game. However, in response to this, video game prices have stayed largely stagnant, outside of the recent $10 bump.

In order to offset this, game makers have begun offering incentives that they can produce without any extra cost, but still charge for. For example, many large games now offer an early access window of a few days to those who are willing to buy the most expensive version of a game.

Even if people bought GTA 6 for $100, that doesn't mean they'll buy other games at $100. I for sure won't be buying GTA 6 at all, and won't be buying any $100 base games.

GTA6 is basically part of the 1% of games that would have a sizable audience willing to pay that much, and even theyd have a big drop off in the number of people willing to buy at full price.

You want the game to bomb because other people not involved with the game want it to be priced higher than itll likely be priced?

And let's not forget the obscene amount of money they'll make on shark cards for the online component. Those damn cards were paying out to the tune of about $700 million dollars a year. They could release GTA6 for zero dollars and justify the development costs entirely by saying the shark card profits from GTA5 paid for it.

it'll be $70 they'll have a $100+ version with a few extra things and like a 3 day early release. a collectors edition at like $150-200. maybe some season pass thing for it too since i'm sure it'll have some planned DLC for it.

but the biggest thing is GTA6O is gonna be a cash cow for them again so they really don't need to even charge for anything but the base game and they'll still make a killing off it. i do wonder how many copies they need to sell at $70 to break even since i'm sure this game will cost more than 5 or RDR2 to make.

Games are basically movies and localized, photorealistic recreations of reality that take hundreds of people years to make and last for dozens of hours. It's absurd that they only cost what they cost now and that the price has gone up as little as it has.

That said, if games cost what they """"should"""" cost, I would never have gotten into gaming as a hobby and I would be forced to abandon it as a hobby now. It would become a luxury hobby, even more than it already is.

They don't need to do that to make massive profits. If anything that would cause then to price out a lot of people, and the demand for this game is massive. There's actually no need to increase the price either because it's just a download or a cheap disc. It Doesn't cost much to distribute it.

To just up the price and tax the consumer would be a bad business move they leaves a bad taste in the consumers mouth when they already have a best guaranteed success.

At $70 it'll be priced competitively. When the mass droves come to buy the game at $70, they'll choose GTA 6 instead of the competitors.

If it's priced at $100 and they see other games priced at $70, some price conscious consumers or family with lower budgets will wind up passing leading to lower sales.

If anything they'll be helping other companies get more sales and lowering their own if they do something like this.

You'll have situations where Little Timmy will wind up getting Watch Dogs 4, or some other game instead of this one when his Mother brings him to Gamestop

Yeah I passed on NBA 2K25 this year because the cost is too high to make sense for a game that's really similar each year. Game companies have gotten greedy and that's why sales are declining for certain games. Plus people are hiring financially already and more price conscious. They'll play last year's game for a few more years instead of a $129 ultimate edition sequel every year to get essentially the same game

This is already kind of happening with early releases. The latest Dragon Ball game released for $100 for a 3 day early access. Civ 7 is releasing 5 days early for $120. Video games are a relatively cheap hobby to have and some people have tons of disposable income and spending 30 to 50 more bucks a year for a few games is nothing.

Shit like this pisses me off. The budgets for the mega producers has exploded and what do they have to show for that expense? Failure after failure.

I'm not even willing to drop $70 on a new game, they think they can get $100 as a norm? So out of touch. Instead of trying to make good games they just keep trying to make "service" games that the developers aren't interested in or just fad trash like the "squad shooters"
