One of my favorite optional characters is a unique mage who becomes a powerhouse for the end of the game.

So this would be Domingo?

Zylo and Domingo are dominating heavily. Some characters join very late, making it difficult to train them. I am in chapter 7 now. Characters like Bleu seem great, but it's difficult to level up at this time.

MZero has beaten Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

I beat Ephraim route on Wii U virtual console, but they added this when I was near the end so I did Eirika's route on NSO. It's Fire Emblem, so the floor is pretty high and this one has a lot of great characters. The world map concept and opportunities to level up outside of main missions is a nice touch. Unfortunately, the main maps could be better. Also the reinforcement spam is too much.

It's a mid-tier FE imo but that's good enough for it to rank very high on this list because FE rocks

I could have finished by now but I have been too curious about character promotions and leveling everyone up. Speaks well of the game, but I'll finally go straight for the finish next. I am in the last chapter.

Final team is Max (main), Arthur, Zylo, Guntz, Alef, Torasu, Domingo, Bleu, Balbaroy, Lyle, Musashi and Hanzou.

Started Shining Force just in time to barely overlap. Here are my notes:

I love the menu animations, especially the yes and no
Wish there was a faster way to talk/interact with stuff
Could really use some QoL additions
Not sure what makes characters attack twice. Used rewind after a double to check my stats and see if I could figure it out, but then I did the exact same attack and got one hit. Random?
WHAT THE HECK DO THESE ITEMS DO
Inventory management is a nightmare

Not bad for a 1992 game though. I think this genre suffers a lot from missing QoL stuff from newer games

Cool. More N64 for Hobo before Harvest Moon.

Happy you started it too, MZero. I think what I have had the most fun with other than planning strategies for each battle is figuring out how character stats and abilities scale. Some characters are very good when you get them but don't really grow much. Some characters initially seem terrible but grow way stronger. You get two knights at the same time somewhat early (well one is optional) that illustrate this perfectly.

Then someone characters like Zylo just keeps on being the best.

I'm pretty sure I have reached the final battle of Shining Force. Or at least the final stretch. There is last dungeon vibes.

The best place to test charcaters I found to be a battle on a dock in chapter 4. Good grinding spot. You just use Egress with the main character.

Yeah I started Kid Chamelon and played some in between grinding at one point in Shining Force, more on that at another point. Then I continued once I finished the latter yesterday.

Ctes has beaten Shining Force

This was very fun and also a well enough change of pace from the million similar games I have played on here so far. The story is enough to keep you invested and while it lacks some qol changes in inventory management in particular, it more than adds up for it.

I have spoken about it a good bit while playing. I think the amount of characters make it so that you can make enough different strategies and try different things. It's a little uneven in classes, there are like 8 knights but 3 healers. There are a good handful of wild cards that replace the more stereoptyical classes though, many of which I ended up using. It could very well not be the last time I played this and I don't say that for too many games I've played here. In particular the longer ones with this one finishing on top of play time so far.

I don't quite think it makes the top tier here (SS is just for showing love to some all time favorites) but its sequel has potential. Might as well get the whole ranking down. It has been a while since I did that:

Ctes has beaten Kid Chameleon

A platformer where you play as Mario and Luigi's long lost third brother under the alias of Kid Chameleon and in the multiverse where Super Mario Bros has an easy mode with no pitfalls and enemies so that he did not die in 1-1 due to his unbelievably slippy shoes regardless of power up that makes Luigi's footing look this master work in comparison and instead took out on an adventure of his own afterward.

Unfortunately our dear main character dies many times in this game since on top of being slippery, the game enjoys traps that are fully trial and error as well as leaps of faith spiced with hitboxes that are usually only the very middle of the enemy animation while his own matches to every pixel. After 100+ levels of mazes with time limit, someone he got to the end of the game that was never to be played again.

To balance things out I finally finished this abomination. Been playing it off and on since last year and finally wrapped it up. Man this game sucks. It's way to easy to get trapped because there are so many dead ends with only one way in and out and also you can't even see where enemies are spawning at times because the whole level doesn't fit on the screen. The one saving grace is that you can continue and don't have to start over from the beginning every time. Still sucks to play though

Sword of Hope had its sequel on 3DS but not the first one apparently. Could get the sequel as well I suppose.

Anyway it was indeed quick

Ctes has beaten Gradius: The Intersteller Assault

It's fun. Gradius is a food formula and it's just more of that. It's not even really hindered by being on the GB like many franchises that has games on stronger platforms are. I place it slightly lower to do length and levels but good game really. I can also really feel I've gotten better at these types of games the past two years. Gradius was the first of its kind I played on NSO and I struggled. This was a breeze. Two bosses it was crucial that I was ready to make an extra shield but yeah. Would be fun to play the first again to compare difficulty now. Perhaps sometime.

Trying to knock out some stuff I started but never finished. Unfortunately, there's a reason I didn't finish them and it's not because I was having too much fun

I don't really like these kinds of games in general because you can only shoot directly in front of you. There are homing missiles but they don't home very well. Stuff can come in from behind which is kinda unfair. Also, touching literally anything just explodes your ship. Why is this thing so brittle? Honestly I feel like the speed boosts hurt more than help because you end up crashing into the floor trying to dodge. Speaking of which, the movement feels really bad. I always felt like I was moving way further than I wanted or not at all.

Not a fan, but at least the memes are legendary. And no, I didn't get all the endings lol one was more than enough

MZero has beaten Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

Another game I started but never finished, although this one was pre-NSO. I lost my save file though so I just restarted on Switch.

To be honest, I would have ranked it a little higher if I just stopped after "beating" the game, but I decided to get all the Crystal Shards. Unfortunately, some of them are kind of annoying (like needing a power you can't get in the stage) and the "true" final boss is kind of lame imo

Still a pretty enjoyable game for the most part, though. Combining powers is a cool concept and Kirby himself has some great moments in the story scenes. On the other hand, it doesn't control very well and feels really slow. Probably on the weaker end of Kirby games I've played, but a solid B tier imo

I think I'm going to play Wario Land 4 next. I played it a ton back in the day via methods but I don't think I ever beat it, so in a way it kind of counts as a game I started (albeit this was over 20 years ago)

Shouldn't take very long either

Wario Land 4 is incredibly good. I have played it countless times on GBA back in the day. Here's no hoping they add the first two at some point soon, even if they aren't as good.

I hope to finish Kid Chamleon and one more game before the weekend, which should be possible since tomorrow is a holiday. This is because I will be marathoning Ocarina of Time in the weekend with two friends that has never before played it before in our monthly (okay not really monthly anymore) game club. I played ALttP with the same people early last year. One of them has since played LBW. Both had played BotW beforehand, one also TotK, that's their full Zelda exposure. This is what I want to be #150 which is why I need to finish two more games.

I thought you finished Kid Chameleon already?

OoT weekend sounds like a good time! Unfortunately I'm pretty booked this weekend so I won't be joining the fun

Oh yeah, I meant Landstalker, no idea why I wrote the previous game I played instead.

Been going through the GB Mega Man titles. As of yesterday, the first two are down, three remain.

I'm in the final stretch of Landstalker but faced a bit of burnout after an annoying boss. I enjoy it, but the combat isn't that great and difficulty exposes the flaws of the game. I think aside from a few annoying bosses, only Greenmaze has not been enjoyable.

MZero has beaten Kirby's Star Stacker (GB)

I've been messing around on this since it dropped and just finished it. At first I quite enjoyed it but the Insane difficulty that unlocks after you beat the other ones was kind of meh. It wasn't too bad, just the stages took a little too long and got kind of tedious. It was also kind of inconsistent in that some stages could be beaten easily in less than a minute and some took like 6 or more, which isn't that long but the gameplay isn't that deep so it kind of drags after awhile. Still pretty solid though

Ctes has beaten Landstalker: The Treasure of King Nole

I beat it yesterday. This was overall a good experience, pretty tough to rank. The core gameplay is pretty simple, I think it worked well enough that it didn't grow old, but I also think the tough sections really highlight the simplicity and to some degree the flaws of it. It feels a bit random at times on top of a high skill level requires. Its controls would have been hell without the control stick despite how I have used the d-pad for almost every non N64 game played so far. The isometric graphics are charming but definitely also a product of its time, leading to some frustrating platforming sections. The maze dungeons were annoying. The last one in particular punished me for getting lost.

The game has a lot of charm though. The characters have personality and the world feels alive to a point you start caring. That wasn't all too common yet at the time. For a 1992 it's quite advanced and very impressive imo.

I have been playing Ocarina all day and tomorrow too. If we finish it I have a very good backup 150. The halfway point is running away from me, but on the other hand I have finished some pretty long games recently.
