The rule is a majority of all votes cast. If all 434 House members vote for someone as they did in the first round then 218 votes are needed to become Speaker. If any member doesn't vote for votes present then that potentially lowers the threshold needed. If 1 to 2 members vote present then 217 votes are needed, if 3 to 4 vote present then 216 are needed and so on.

Yeah, if a member initially doesn't vote they get another chance at the end to vote. If they still don't vote when they're given another chance at the end (like if they're not there) then they wouldn't have a vote counted and that would possibly lower the threshold for a majority.

I really hope this is a shitshow because it raises the possibility that we get paralysis for the next few years when it comes to legislation. That's the best case scenario.

This was the most likely outcome.

I suppose it could be worse but Johnson worked with Democrats before because we had a Democratically controlled Senate and a Democratic President so he kinda had to if anything was going to get passed. With Republicans controlling everything it's probably just going to be whatever Trump wants.

If they were going to just fall in line they wouldn't have voted against Johnson in the first place.

If he had to give up stuff just to get the Speaker position filled, which should be the simplest thing in the world, i have no clue how actual legislation is going to go. Remember this is the same group that had a 30 seat majority in 2016 and got like 1 major bill passed in 2 years. This time they'll have 5, alongside Thune maintaining the filibuster.

Checked back to Topic to see the post count. It doesnt have 100+ posts I guess Mike Johnson was reelected.

Well, that was less enthusiastic than expected. We shall see what is to come. I still think this is going to be a nightmare when it comes to actual laws, as the revolt that happened with the debt ceiling showed.
