Whats your all-time favorite JRPG? Are there any hidden gems I should check out? And how do you feel about the shift towards more action-based combat in newer titles?

Lets talk grinding, plot twists, and those ridiculously hard optional bosses!

All time favorites: Grandia 2, Phantasy Star 4, Lunar
Best recent: Metaphor
Hidden gem: Does Lost Odyssey count?

My favorite traditional JRPG would be a tie between Dragon Quest 7, and Final Fantasy 9..

For more non-traditional, and my favorite game of all time, it's Soul Nomad and The World Eaters.

Atelier and Blue Reflection

Ive never seen Blue Reflection mentioned by anyone anywhere besides JRPG Jungle.

My all-time favorite video game, let alone JRPG, is Xenogears. It's in dire need of a remake to update some of the...less than desirable gameplay elements, but it still remains a masterpiece of a game.

Parasite Eve 1-2, Legend of Legaia (not Duel Saga), Valkyrie Profile 1-2, Wild ARMs 1-3, Breath of Fire 3-4, Vagrant Story, and Star Ocean 2 are all excellent, previous gen JRPGs worth a shot.

Too hard to choose one favorite. Probably either Lunar SSSC, Kingdom Hearts 2, Final Fantasy 4, 7 or 8 or Suikoden II. With honorable mention to several more, like Chrono Trigger, FF6, Xenogears, MMX CM and Paper Mario TTYD.

As for real time battle, I like it when it works well but I'm awfully picky about it. It's hard to find one that strikes a balance of Action and RPG instead of having the two step on each other's toes.

Also, here's a recommendation of one that really flew under the radar but was absurdly good. Full disclosure: I happen to know the guy who made it, so part of it could be bias. But anyway.

The title is Forever Home and despite being an RPG Maker game it was really outstanding. The first couple of hours are filled with annoying anime tropes but if you can get through that part, it eases up on that pretty quickly. I wasn't a fan of it having both an MP system and a TP system at first, but after getting a feel for it, I did like how that ended up working.

it depends on my mood I guess. Ive been playing SaGa games now, almost done with first run of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, then bought Romancing SaGa 3 Remaster, SaGa Frontier Remaster and SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions.

Played RS3 awhile then tried Scarlet Grace and Im stuck. This battle system is just so damn fun I cant stop playing.

In that order.

I prefer tern based RPGs but the shift to more action oriented doesn't bother me. Besides there are still people like Atlus making great turn base RPGs.
