they are not bad games but i dont think they capture the feeling of playing the snes games

and the fact your forced to only play as DK (unless its multiplayer) is dumb

Yea, they are good games, but calling them DKC is rather misleading.

I'm a diehard for dkc 1-3 and couldn't really get into the new ones. Not really sure what my problem is though and it might just be I'm too beholden to the old ones. I play those three every few years

Yeah what little I played of them I wasn't feeling it at all. 90s Rare was the goat.

Yeah Tropical Freeze is excellent, but a bit overly complicates with the impossible to find collectibles on each stage. Also the physics are different. TF is a bit floaty and doesnt control as tight as Country.

I still havent played them (I refused to use the Wiimote on Returns and its just recently come to Switch, plus Im cheap and Nintendo is basically Scrooge McDuck when it comes to sales of decades old shit). I do own Tropical Freeze though.

I play through the first three every few years. For my money, 2 is the best side scrolling platformer ever.

Yeah. The controls arent as tight, rolling momentum isnt as useful or as functional, bonus room in the newer games are awful, and the zoomed out camera makes everything feel less immersive.

They are still really good games though, but they are always going to be compared to nearly perfect games like DKC2

Tropical Freeze is my favorite of the franchise, unless you catch me on a day when 2 is my favorite.

The graphics went a long way toward establishing the DLC series' identity. When they made it just look like New Super Mario Bros in the jungle, well, it just felt like New Super Mario Bros in the jungle.

I think they're better. Especially TF.

They really need to bring K Rool back for the next one...both Returns and Freeze had rather lackluster enemies.

I did get very tired of the jungle setting. Iirc, it was jungles and temples for most of the game. This was that era where Nintendo for some reason just said DK is just a big dumb ape and he likes bananas a lot and lives in the jungle

Tropical freeze doesnt play exactly like the original trilogy, but its still the same level of quality. Id easily argue its better than 3 and stands right up there with 1 and 2

They are better.

DKCR and TF have a few key differences to the SNES trilogy

• Bonus rooms are not unique to the level
• A majority of levels are sections you cannot stay still on or go back to. They all crumble.
• No animal buddies or kongs
• Rolling works differently. It's a shot of fixed speed, rather than starting a run or accelerating through enemies
• Heavy emphasis on many collectibles instead of just bonus rooms + DK coin

That being said, Tropical Freeze was excellent. Every level felt unique, like it was trying out some new idea/gimmick. DK doesn't feel great to control himself, but the levels were great.

Plus all the bonus rooms in Returns/Tropical Freeze are the same shit. All of the SNES games had different bonus room challenges

I thought the new ones were good, but different. DKC2 is still the greatest platformer of all time tho.

The topic title is true, but Tropical Freeze might be the best of the bunch. Once you get used to the controls, it really has what might be the best level design in a 2D platformer. I haven't played Returns, and I don't expect it to be as good as TF, but I'm still excited for the release next month

I like them, but those boss fights can drag out too long. I know hit person three times is old hat but that Owl boss in Tropicsl Freeze was annoying. Also I know I ducked but maybe I hit down and right so I get hit anyway blargh.

It's more why does DKC 3 suck so much. Well Kiddie Kong of course, and the open world is neat but I can never get myself into that crap game.

Aquatic ambience is the perfect water level music tho. Wises soundtracks are much better than what we got with 3

I thought they were far superior to the original trilogy. I'm not sure why those get the praise they do but I love TF in particular, own it on the Wii U

They don't really match the atmosphere of the first three, but that doesn't make them bad platformers by any means.

Yeah, something always felt off for me in DKCR and TF, I think it was the atmosphere. The SNES trilogy had a fantastic atmosphere. TF is probably a better game in most respects, but I will always prefer the original trilogy; DKC1 was literally the first game I ever played, so it will always be one of my favorites.

Also you can play as the other Kongs in TF single player, but only on a harder difficulty and after 100%ing the game I think. Which makes me wonder why they didn't just allow that from the start.

I like the atmosphere in DK wii era. I just didn't like the bosses I'll reiterate.

DKC3 gets real challenging once you reach Razer Ridge onwards, but is rewarding af. The Lost World boss is the most intense in the franchise.

Did anyone else play the GBA remakes? I think they're actually pretty underrated. They also give DKC3 a new world and an entirely new soundtrack (by David Wise), so DKC3 GBA were the last new DKC levels made by Rare.

I remember when I was younger I really wanted those DKC soundtracks, but it's not like you could go to the mall to buy one. I think they were through Nintendo Power only.

That DKC3 tune was OK but it can't compare to Aquatic Ambiance. DKC 2 is a masterwork too.

DKC2 has the best video game OST of all time, for me at least

For me, soundtrack is one of the areas where DKC3 is clearly weaker than the others. It's enough of a tonal shift that you can clearly tell it wasn't composed by the same person as the other two (and it wasn't)

The woman who did the DKC3 soundtrack did compose a fair number of DKC1's tracks actually

i tried returns and beat like the first 2 worlds and just didn't really care for it. like it's not bad but i'd rather just play the snes games over it. never bothered to buy tropical freeze and doubt i'd buy another game in the series if they ever bother to make a new one.

i only ever played tropical freeze. Gave it a couple hours, it didnt really grab me

I feel like it's only weak in comparison to DKC1 and 2 having some of the best video game music of the era period. DKC3 still has some great stuff on there.
